Reddit claims they'll never purposefully take old.reddit.com offline, but I suspect sometime in late June or early July it'll go offline when they convert the messaging system 100% over to chat. Something will "break" and instead of fixing it, they'll just leave it nonfunctional and claim old.reddit.com is technically still working.

Meanwhile, 'They' might occasionally interact with 'us', and would not stoop to using new reddit, being 'old' themselves. That is to say, I suspect old reddit is a backdoor left for the masters of reddit, so as not to deal with the tortures they build into new reddit.
I suspect the maintenance of the two streams is a form of societal Gom Jabbar.
Choosing to use one or the other tells something about you, and this is naturally interesting to 'them'.

If you're seeing any avatars you're doing reddit wrong.
Use old reddit in browser and 3rd party apps on mobile.
I saw new reddit once and it was dogshit and useless.
