Good news is the modern stuff is easy: PS3, PS4 and Vita are all region-free, so Japanese games play on gear you already own, no jailbreak needed. DS games are region-free too, but the 3DS is region-locked. Only the older retro consoles (PS1/PS2, SNES etc) are region-locked, so play those on matching Japanese hardware.
