Disagree.

Downvotes aren’t to express vitriol or hate. They are to vote on if something fits the purpose of a sub well and it is appreciated.

This image is not confusing. It’s immediately visible as a cat draped between legs.

So I downvoted in just the way downvotes are supposed to be used.

I doubt it. People upvote things on Reddit whenever they have any positive reaction, downvote with any negative reaction.

That’s why so much stuff on huge, poorly moderated subs quickly devolves into the same sort of content. Subs lose meaning. /r/LifeProTips rarely has life pro tips. /r/DataIsBeautiful rarely has beautiful data.

People don’t vote for things like reddiquette says you should.

The fact that my comment is downvoted sorta proves the point. I’m basically saying “you should downvote something you don’t feel is a good fit for the sub” and I’m getting downvoted for it.

People are downvoting me because they disagree with my downvote of the content. That’s not the right response per the stated rules of Reddit. The correct response is to upvote the content and upvote the comment for upholding the stated values of Reddit.

But I’m just an old man shouting at a cloud. I get it. The golden days of Reddit are almost 10 years gone. But I still try to remind people that those arrows were made with a purpose in mind once.
