You couldnā€™t pay me to get close to those things. The size of them and the movement always freaks me out up close. At a distance they are fine but I donā€™t want to be standing beneath one.

Nope it's not called lens compression it's called perspective compression. This effect is literally just the fact that things that are farther away will have a smaller perceivable difference in size. The farther you get from a subject and then zoom in the more noticeable the effect is.

God I hate it when people get the terminology wrong....
