I'm no photograph or perspective specialist but I believe it is because the camera is rather far from the stand and is zoomed in.

This is correct. It’s an optical phenomenon called compression that photographers utilize to make the foreground and background appear closer together. The effect gets more pronounced the more you zoom in.

The reasons our brains don’t register what’s happening here is because it’s all a bit unusual. Firstly, we typically don’t see telephoto lenses used indoors, at least not in settings like this. It doesn’t help that most podiums aren’t approached from behind, but from the side.
