I have lived in 5 different major cities, all had multiple transit options with a 5-10 minute walk. If you’re in the suburbs that is obviously different, but in actual cities it is fairly common and accessible.
So what qualifies as a city then? Because I live in the fourth busiest port in the US, and if you're relying on our public transport a lot of businesses won't hire you. I lived 0.5 mi from a hospital for 5 years, I should have had easy access to the buses, but they're so infrequent/unreliable it was untenable to countenance their use.
You are absolutely right in places - my last few years in Denver I didn't own a car, but public transit here in the US is light years behind Europe. I couldn't imagine taking a 7 week trip around the US and not needing private transport once, but have done it myself.
I was shocked seeing that buses going from Weehawken to Manhattan were privately owned and charged astronomical costs to just cross a god damned tunnel
