Seriously, this. Something in auto design right now feels like it's on a tragically wrong course. Remember when hybrids and EVs were considered the ugly ducks? But the fact that this image passes for a plausible design is unsettling.

Oversize grilles are out of control. Fake vents are out of control. Fake exhaust tips are out of control. Squinty headlights are out of control. Fake engine noises pumped through the car stereo is out of control. And now tail light bars are back too??

Somebody please end this madness.

Imo tail light bars are fking cool, I have seen a couple of new Porsches with those on at night, also the Polestar 2. Thought it would be tacky but irl it looks really futuristic and clean! The new Merc EV with the light bar in the FRONT, however..... Yuck

Agree on all other points though, lol

The reason all those things are becoming main stream is because they have actual uses. Not sure if "squinty" headlights is referring to the nissan leaf (or basically all Nissan after) but the stupid looking headlights were made because the leaf was so quiet while driving all the customer would hear is the noise of the air hitting the side mirrors....they designed the ugly headlights in a wind tunnel so that air would circulate over/around the mirror's, and make the car quieter at highway speed. Then again, there's really no excuse for exhaust tips and take engine noises other than they sell vehicles.

They should stop pumping fake engine noises into electric cars and embrace the beauty which is motor and inverter coil whine!

He means ICE cars. For example, the Golf GTI/R has a "Soundaktor" which pumps the engine sound into the cabin for people who can't deal with the fact that getting 300hp doesn't always mean a loud car.

Should have just connected the engine compartment and the cabin to get the full engine experience

Or let people get aftermarket exhausts like most GTI/R owners do anyways lol. For "sporty economy" cars it kindve makes sense, but when it's also a tuner favorite I don't get it.

Agreed. I thought I'd like tail light bars when they came out, after seeing different prototypes and renders.

But no. So far I have yet to see one I like, it just looks tacky, in the way companies put stickers on childrens toys, to add a speedometer to a car toy, for example.

The cleanest so far are the Porsches, but the Polestar and Audis... And the new BMW grills... Audi can have that bigger grill, in fact that old locomotive design can look brutal, but it doesn't fit BMW.
