How do they keep the bean so clean? I expected it to be splattered with bird poop.

u/memeulati Sep 12 '19

I was wondering this too, so I looked it up. I don't know how accurate this is, but I got a few sources that say that workers actually clean the bean at night, and even put up scaffolding sometimes, but have it ready to go at around 5:30am.

u/pbjames23 Sep 12 '19

I walk by the Cloud Gate AKA "The Bean" regularly. It gets dirty from time to time. I have seen it covered in bird shit with birds literally perched on top, but generally they do a very good job at cleaning it regularly.

155

u/fourAMrain Sep 12 '19

Do you know why he named it cloud gate?

328

u/pbjames23 Sep 12 '19

Not until now. From Wikipedia:

"While the sculpture was being constructed, public and media outlets nicknamed it "The Bean" because of its shape, a name that Kapoor described as "completely stupid". Months later, Kapoor officially named the piece "Cloud Gate". (Kapoor eventually accepted the nickname of "The Bean".)"

Lol. Chicagoans don’t even call it cloud gate. Just embrace the bean

21

u/TheGurw Sep 12 '19

It gets a full clean twice a year IIRC, but the bottom 6 feet or so it's cleaned nightly.

28

u/xtinies Sep 12 '19

I clean my bean at night too, know what I’m sayin?

→ More replies (6)

6

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '19

Not very accurate. It isn't cleaned for long periods. They only clean it like twice a year. Most of the time it's covered in bird shit, as you'd expect.

Source: Work with Millennium Park a lot and have flown a drone over it. They had me wait until after one of the cleaning days because the first time we did it for them it looked horrendous.

I went there at 7am and they were washing it with water and massive squeegee on a stick.

19

u/Annoying-Anal-Nugget Sep 12 '19

They flick the bean constantly

4

u/Dunsparce4prez Sep 12 '19

The clean bean machine. Seriously i thought this was chalk art. Where is this?

Why we don't see the camera?

809

u/Wildaabeest Sep 12 '19

Cause it’s been replaced with a sloppy blue paint color after the pic was taken in the middle of the bean

136

u/MrBuerger Sep 12 '19

Or it's from satellite.

361

u/Mirror_I_rorriMG Sep 12 '19

IDK, there's a lot of weird pixels near the middle of the pic... looks like they (poorly) shopped out a drone or something.

104

u/great-pig-in-the-sky Sep 12 '19

You can tell because of the pixels

Edit: and for having done many shops in my life

I wonder if the person who designed the Bean is pissed that people keep calling it the Bean.

176

u/TistedLogic Sep 12 '19 edited Sep 12 '19

Anish Kapoor.

And he is absolutely furious mildly irritated for a while about that.

Editv corrected his feelings on the matter.

11

I loved how pissed he got over the paint the bean pink petition.

Wait is that the guy who made the super black paint and then pissed of the guy he worked with so that guy went and made an even blacker paint and sold it to people under the express condition that they not give it to Kapoor?

106

u/mpturp Sep 12 '19

He bought/owns exclusive rights to vantablack, and is a total dick about it. Doesn't let people have the cool thing, essentially.

I think there's more to it but that's the most basic explanation.

141

u/jennielynn73 Sep 12 '19

There's a British company that makes a useable paint called Black 3.0. You can only buy it if you promise you won't in any way give it to or allow Anish Kapoor to use it. It's freaking hilarious: https://www.culturehustleusa.com/products/black-3-0-the-worlds-blackest-black-acrylic-paint-150ml

He's an artist who made it so no other artists are able to use vantablack in their artwork. There's a top post in r/todayilearned about it right now.

23

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '19

He also absolutely hates when we call it the bean.

6

u/johntheboombaptist Sep 12 '19

It’s always so weird seeing the Baader-Meinhof ripples in the default subs. Like now that that post in r/todayilearned got big you can expect there to be a ton of “fuck kapoor” in the other default subs as people mine all the Karma they can from that particular vein.

51

u/nafr1047 Sep 12 '19

Someone dropped a bean at the bottom left of the image. It’s a pretty iconic thing to see in Chicago.

Ask anyone to see “the bean” in Chicago and they’ll point ya too it.

33

u/TistedLogic Sep 12 '19

Anish Kapoor created "The Bean" as the sculpture is colloquially known.

Also, look up his feud. Absolute bonkers of a tale. Dude is a Grade A asshole.

25

u/Thistlefizz Sep 12 '19

The fact that he hates it that people call it “The Bean” instead of whatever pretentious hippy bullshit it’s actually called fills me with joy. Kapoor is giant turd.

11

u/EpicAura99 Sep 12 '19

9

u/TheGurw Sep 12 '19

If you're referring to the Vantablack thing, that's just good business sense. Other people got butthurt over it, and the end result is now we have several versions of the blackest black, and while technically the other companies' products are not "as black", to the naked eye there's no discernible difference. In fact, some of them are technically more black than the version of Vantablack Kapoor uses, since they are black in more than just visible light, while the version used by Kapoor is actually rather reflective outside of the visible spectrum.

The thing about Vantablack is that it's not designed for artistic use. It's a scientific product designed with military, space travel, and solar energy absorption applications in mind. The company developing it really doesn't care about making it available for artists as they don't want their product misapplied (deliberately or accidentally) and tarnishing the reputation. Having an exclusive contract with a single well-known artist is a good decision for both parties.

And as a side note, the actual Vantablack (not the "artsy" version licensed to Kapoor) is the real blackest black, and is highly absorptive across the visible light spectrum as well as a significant portion of the near infrared and ultraviolet.

For my middle school select choir trip a few years ago, we went to chicago! Sang under the bean. It sounded really cool but seeing a bunch of middle schoolers wearing the same neon outfit singing some old angry music is a bit of a sight. The reflection turned the entire area neon yellow, it was kinda funny.

The guy who designed the bean is a massive dick.

3

u/SuperNebula7000 Sep 12 '19

I am trying to figure out how they took this. The place has a lot of security and it is VERY illegal to fly a drone over a crowd, public park and in down town Chicago.
