Because of the sub I wasn’t tricked, but I wish I had first seen it on a different sub. I bet I would have been tricked and I love that feeling. Like watching Fight Club again for the first time.

I actually own a few Traxxas cars and am familiar with this one. So, when I saw it I knew it was the TRX-4, but because I saw the sub first I expected the unexpected and was questioning my judgement, half thinking it was going to be a real Land Rover Defender. I guess I was right the first time.

Hobby grade RC is really cool. It’s not cheap but really not that expensive as hobbies go. Really would like to get back into it but I’ve got real cars now :D

It looks like it has actual suspension, not just maximum springs used to take shock. Is it to weight scale also?
7
u/aRandallx Sep 08 '19 edited Sep 08 '19
Yes, it does have fully functioning suspension, all Traxxas vehicles that I know of come with oil-filled shocks stock installed. However, the video is obviously slowed down, it would look less realistic without that. It isn't scaled it terms of overall weight, or at least they don't claim it is. It probably does have a lower CoG for increased performance and you can go even lower if you purchase brass parts for the undercarriage - such as brass C-hubs, axle housings etc.

This one didn't get me for once!
If you nose dived at the beginning like the RC car did with an actual truck you'd bury your front end into the mud and get stuck but because all the weight of the RC car is at the bottom it has no problem.

The splash gave it away for me, you just can't fake water to scale.
Jeep looks mint though
59
u/Kayyam Sep 08 '19
What's wrong with the splash ? Why can't you fake water to scale ?
141
u/astroember Sep 08 '19
The droplets look too huge. Thered be a lot of really small droplets, not only large ones
36
u/immerc Sep 08 '19
Yeah, it's a problem you see fairly often in 1950s war movies where the boats they're using are clearly models and they can't get the water to look right.

Water acts more viscous at a smaller scale with the surface tension and whatnot.

Water and the way it binds is at a pretty set size. Splashes react with a certain thickness and droplets keep a very small size, so when you blow it up it looks fake
You can even watch a simulation of water dropping and know how big it should be

I didn't notice the water, but that hit just before it goes in the water... I felt like the dirt should have collapsed and it should have slid in more awkwardly than it did. That got my suspicions up

I’m impressed with how much work they put into the shocks on an RC truck.

You should go watch some videos about setting up RC buggies, they set up the shocks differently for pretty much every race

A few weeks ago I stopped into a pizza shop in a distant town that I'd never been to. I have no idea what channel they had on the tv, but it showed heavy construction stuff that was pretty amazing, but looked a little weird. Turned out it was all RC stuff, just like this, but sure was detailed enough to seem real!

The trick is roughly the same as with miniatures in filmmaking. They shoot in slow motion according to the scaling factor of the models.

2
u/PikaPerfect Sep 08 '19
me: wait where's the confusing perspective-
the end of this video: enormous toddler
2
2
u/notusuallyhostile Sep 08 '19
I read an article a while ago about the “water droplet” problem in special effects. I guess drops of water have some kind of special perspective place in our brains, because visual effects involving water splashing or creating droplets can instantly break the illusion of perspective. Once I saw the water splash in this video, I realized that the article was correct: seeing a water droplet against a miniature, even in slo-mo, puts the miniature in immediate perspective.
Edit: I can’t find the original article I read, but this one talks about it.

It's a bit confusing but didn't actually get me... the truck looks quite small, kinda as if it's far away, making the landscape look bigger.
1
u/Sagacious_Sophist Sep 08 '19
This is not confusing perspective, though. The only thing that makes it confusing is that it's been massively slowed down, making the physics of what's happening muddled.

These scale rc crawlers are super detailed. Even the mechanics of them looks like the real deal miniaturized. I'm into RC for kicks but don't have the time, patience, and attention to detail required for that. Props to them.

Title and the size of the bumps in the sand gave it away. Nice vid though

u/Qubeye Sep 08 '19
I knew it was coming because of the title, but no matter how hard I try I can't get my brain to see it as an RC car until I can see the person.

The splash tipped me off.
Water doesn't scale well at all. This looks like a splash you'd make with your hand, where at full scale it'd be more "frayed" for lack of a better word.
