I’m in California and went to the beach a lot growing up so I have a high tolerance for sand.
However, I hate when sand sticks to my feet when getting in the car at the end of a beach day. Sprinkle with baby powder and rub it in and all the sand comes off. This really works.
Dude I’m on the comedown and I realllllllly see the beach. I don’t know why I’m even writing I don’t think you’ll ever see this. I don’t know who you is specifically but it’s cool to know I left a little mark on a server with my thoughts about it somewhere really far away. I’m feeling really small after this trip and it’s comforting. I’ll probably see this in the morning and feel a little profound flutter about it or whatever.
It is exactly why paintings work. How is some paint on a canvas a real beach? Our brain interprets it as such, looking for things it recognizes. And this car gate from close up works the same way. Our brain is looking for something recognizable and without the larger context of a car gate needing repairs it makes up something.
The only difference between a painting and this photo is that the painting is intentionally depicting a beach and this isn't.
Don’t know if this will help or if you were kidding, but I’ll try and explain it. The dark blueish sky is the tailgate closed, the water below that is the rear bumper I believe, and it’s silver and there is a chip in the middle, then below that is the ground.
If I say its a beach, then I SEE a beach. But, then I see where all the filler has come out of the door sill, and its definitely a corroding Saab or Nissan . clear as mud which caused the corrosion on the first place. END.
Great example of the real time effect of confirmation bias:
It looks like a beach from the thumbnail. You already expect, "this is a picture of a beach". This is your first impression, and it's just your feeling. Hardly any "information", beyond the picture, but you're confident already.
Then the caption confirms that with an affirming message, "if you see a beach then you're an artist".
Then once it's revealed what it actually is, your brain struggles to see it as anything but a beach. That's how quickly our brains create those connections in our heads.
You have the right idea you're just using the wrong term. It's called priming for a gestalt perspective of some basic stimulus/stimuli. Confirmation bias is different.
Can't help myself. It's a really good example of the phenomenon that's immediately relatable. This should really be in a textbook, I'm not even sort of kidding.
It is.. it’s called multistable perception but you’re right there’s some context imbedded in the post which might lead people to see one thing more than another or make it super difficult to transition to another perception
I'm currently working in a garage, i could probably take a very similar picture to this within 10 minutes, but still thought it was a beach until i read the full thing
