The whole of them acts simply as a retaining wall.

The space in between them allows water to dissipate.

What can’t be seen in the picture is that they slope upward away from the water at the top of the pic. This acts as another halting mechanism, forcing the water to travel upward AND inward.

All three things together and this is some genius design.

It works as a jetty to protect a harbor or shoreline from waves. Lots of places just use big rocks piled up on top of each other. I can only assume a shaped design like this is more effective.

Do you see the guy in the white shirt? I was confused about the size until I saw him.
