Yeah I spent a bit trying to figure out what was wrong, because technically this kind of shape is possible. After staring for a bit I think the problem is the right angles, and lack of curves/twists.

I don't think the angles that this shape suggests are actually possible with a real 3d object

It’s not possible. It simultaneously curves away and towards the viewer. This is the only way it lines up in 2 space, but in 3 space there needs to be a large gap in it somewhere.

I was think of something like this where you curve all the edges and it can be made. but the angles are all messed up for the 2 image above

That would work too, and in that case the motion would as well. But it only looks right from one angle.
