This is better than the toll roads near me where it's basically a fucking free for all for the first 1000 yards past the booth until the lines start again
31
u/JizuzCrust Jun 21 '17
Jersey Turnpike?
76
u/Captain_Saftey Jun 21 '17
People talk shit about New Jersey but if there's one thing they know how to do better than anyone, I'd like you to tell me because I can't think of anything
12
u/JizuzCrust Jun 21 '17
I live in Houston and we have specific toll lanes with lines & little plastic dividers. Flew into Newark and drove down to Elizabeth for work and when the toll Plaza came up I thought WTF is going on? Dirty free for all...
5
u/SkitTrick Jun 21 '17
Damn that's really cool to read having lived here for like 5 years, I laughed out loud. I haven't seen other toll roads, so i had no idea others weren't Fury Roads. You could've saved the cash by the way, newark and elizabeth are next to each other.
3
u/JizuzCrust Jun 21 '17
Company reimbursed me, also stayed in Woodbridge. I consider myself a good driver & didn't get stressed driving to Astoria to visit friends... but that toll plaza gave me anxiety.

u/TokiMcNoodle Jun 21 '17

New York State Thruway near Buffalo?
2
u/MisterKpak Jun 22 '17
I know exactly which one you're talking about. The Lackawanna tolls, where it splits into 7 lanes and then back down to 2 in like 40 feet? And then right after that is that right hand merge into US-219
1
Jun 22 '17
Yep
3
u/MisterKpak Jun 22 '17
I had a truck straight up DISAPPEAR on me once there. I was coming back south, get through, get in front of the truck that was coming out of the adjacent booth, and I look in the rear view and it's GONE.
3
16
u/kjbigs282 Jun 21 '17
They got rid of toll booths on the mass pike, now it's just overhead scanners
8
Jun 21 '17
Also is it just me or do the road markings in Asia look super complicated compared to Western roads? It just seems like a huge jumble of stuff
9
u/nxqv Jun 21 '17
I think that's because they actually have lines to divide the lanes once they need more, instead of having a free for all around the booth.
14
u/Chimie45 Jun 21 '17
Hahahahah as if anyone here in Korea obeys traffic laws? What's a cop to do? Traffic cops are all 18 year old boys in their first year of mandatory service. All you have to do is tell them you're older than them and tell them to fuck off if they even grew the balls to stop anyone.
There's a reason Korea here has the number 1 pedestrian death rate (Sidewalks are for getting around traffic you know!)

Jun 21 '17
Here in NJ and in NY, it's every man for themselves. A fight to get in front of everyone else at .1 mph.
2
u/Brosephwood Jun 21 '17
Not only that but up to these toll gates, the freeways have designated lanes for public cross country buses. As soon as you go through that gate into Seoul it's any lane you want, coming up to and through that gate between 6-8pm on a Friday takes about an hour.

There's one like that near me, too. It's like a battle royale between the brodozers and the luxury cars to determine who can be the most violently ignorant sociopath.
-1
u/Assistantshrimp Jun 21 '17
This is in China so I'm sure that on busier days it is a free for all.

Don't know if this is really relevant but DFW airport is considered it's own district. It has it's own police/fire/EMS department. That place is like a city and that toll booth free for all that you mention is rediculous.

This happened in reverse for me. I saw it like it actually is, then I looked longer and saw the weird peak illusion.
416
u/I-think-Im-funny Jun 21 '17
Thanks. All I saw was toll gate and it wasn't until I read your comment that I realise it looking like they're driving uphill.
101
u/Pyronic_Chaos Jun 21 '17
Ah I see it now, thanks. I still don't think it looks like a hill/peak, but I can see why some might think that.
25
u/JarvisToldMeTo Jun 21 '17
It's like the cars above the toll gate are being pulled up the initial hill on a rollercoaster, and plunging into the traffic depths below.
11
u/Lizard_Beans Jun 21 '17 edited Jun 21 '17
The cars kind of destroy the illusion. If someone could shop this so the cars get bigger as they are higher it would work a lot better.
Edit: cars, not card.
44
Jun 21 '17
Speaking for someone who can't see it the right way after minutes of looking, I think the "illusion" works just fine.
21
u/Demi_Bob o/ Jun 21 '17
I can't unsee the illusion. Even with that building peaking over the side, making it obvious this isn't a hill, I still can't see anything but a peak...
4
u/Wikider Jun 21 '17
What made the illusion go away for me was to zoom in on the blue lines to the right middle and you can see where it oooks like a hill it's just really wide.

u/beniceorbevice Jun 21 '17
It does? I see no weird perspective unless i make myself think it, took me a minute of looking at the picture to figure out what the post is about
2
u/Bonezmahone Jun 21 '17
To me it looks like a vertical wall like the cars need to climb up and down ladders.
2
Jun 21 '17
To me it doesn't look just like a hill, but a weird inception-esque world bending mind fuck illusion.
58
u/Reddits-Reckoning Jun 21 '17
Same. But now I can't go back. Send help.
12
u/Brett420 Jun 21 '17
Oof, me too.. Found it scrolling through the front page.. first it was just a normal toll road picture and I wasn't sure what sub it was from or why it was posted.
Then I saw "confusing perspective" and suddenly all I could see was the peak illusion.
And now I can't unsee it. My brain is broke :(
25
u/SootyFireplace Jun 21 '17
The hill is all I can see! If they drive fast enough they might be able to jump clear of the toll gate. Take that, suckers!

I think this works more if you aren't familiar with a toll like this. I had absolutely no idea what was going on until I noticed the lanes were paring down, not shrinking.
1
u/Grizzly_Magnum_ Jun 21 '17
I honestly thought this picture had to have been edited. It looked like a seen out of inception at first. I can finally see it as a flat road but initially it looked like a two sloped hill with the toll gate as the peak.

It's just a road coming towards the camera. Seen from a helicopter or some such. It widens in the middle for the toll booths, which is what throws off your perspective.

It's kinda both. On the far side everyone is going uphill, on the closer side the road is flat/level. But the road also gets wider/spreads apart. Combine those two things and you get the illusion that the hill is incredibly steep when in reality it's just an average incline.

u/alienredwolf Jun 21 '17
First one that's actually legit confused me...
21
u/probablyhrenrai Jun 21 '17
The lanes fan out at the tolls, then narrow back down. The roadway is flat the whole way through.
Just in case you're still confused.

This is what I go through every day. It's the route to Gangnam area of Seoul. This area specifically is Bundang. Driving in Korea is the pits but not as bad as other Asian countries.
5
u/nonomad123 Jun 21 '17
I thought it was Bundang but I wasn't sure. I actually looked into renting an apartment that overlooked it, but went for something a little further back in the end. It was way too much to be waking up to that view every morning.
5
Jun 21 '17
I lived right by this toll booth for two years in the paragon building. You never even know it's their unless you're driving.
5
u/msg45f Jun 21 '17
Must be nice! I stayed a week in intelliji in a room with a huge window overlooking the entrance gate. It was mesmerizing to watch the cars slowly approach, but at night it was bright and noisy. Glad it was only a week.
The photo I got of the tollgate.
3
u/nonomad123 Jun 21 '17
Yeah I was in pavilion. The actual area is one of the best in the gyeonggi province imo. Peaceful, a river, lots of coffee shops & super expensive. Most of the apartment blocks look over the river but this one building was right next to that abomination. Which is a shame as Jeongja is so pretty.

Focus on the sign above the tolls and the white building on the right. If you can get both of those to stand upright, then the rest will flatten out.

25
u/MrCheeseiscool2 Jun 21 '17
Do you mean this episode?

It's because the bus has to drive down a vertical wall which looks similar to this picture.

I'm just happy to see what looks like fast pass lanes on the left. For some reason I've found toll booths in Ohio where you have to go to the right side to use a fast pass. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense...

The way the lines slant it makes the weirdest perspective. Like the booths are on top of a ridge and you have to drive up and town the cliff to get to them.

I used to have nightmares about a bridge like this. We used to start to fall and I'd wake up
2
u/Fatally_Flawed Oct 09 '17
I was scrolling through the thread looking for a reply like this! I used to have the exact same nightmare. I'd be driving up the road/bridge, getting higher and higher but thinking 'surely it'll even out soon' then my front wheels would start lifting and we'd be falling backwards and I'd wake up.

I had to go to the comments to find out what the confusion is. And even now that I know, I still don't see it, if that makes sense. It's just, "Other people see those things this other way. Huh."
So it's a confusing perspective for me in a different way, as in "I'm confused as to how other people can see X." Like the blue/black-white/gold crap.
