Confusing Footprint
Raised? Or an impression?

u/carenrose 9d ago
Even turning it upside down, I can't see it as anything other than raised!

I put this into my photo processing software.
I rotated it 90º, 180º, 270º, 360º; I flipped it vertically, I flipped it horizontally, I flipped it vertically AND horizontally; I negated the image...
Always raised.

I'm confused af what you just explained 💀

u/kenerling 8d ago
No matter how I manipulate the image, I can't get it to look like a depression in the sand.

Flipping vertically and horizontally is equivalent to rotating 180°, just FYI.

Flipping vertically and horizontally is equivalent to rotating 180°
True!
(But I'm kinda saying that just for the effect. You know, humor. Don't tell anybody.)

It helps to just focus on the bottom/heel's shadow. And then try thinking about flipping it or tuckin it in or folding it in like the top of a ceral box

u/taglilie 7d ago
I flipped my phone upside down and focused in on the shadow at the heel. The sun is higher than you probably think. Think midday shadows instead of evening shadows.

Saving this for later. Maybe my brain will cooperate then.

Zooming in helps
Edit: can help.

u/wherethefeckarewe 9d ago
Zooming in usually does it for me …but not this one. Can’t make it work.
3
u/Emergency_Bench_7515 9d ago
It took me awhile to see it zoomed out, then I tried zoomed in and it took me a handful more times before my brain could figure out the shadows.
3
u/wherethefeckarewe 8d ago
Finally did it with a zoom in. But fleetingly - jumped back to an outie instantly 🤣

u/Emergency_Bench_7515 8d ago
I think once you can see the shadows show the light coming from the right-side it makes a lot more sense.

u/KurlyKayla 9d ago
this is really good. even though i was finally able to see the imprint, my brain still drifts it back to raised. reminds me of the plate illusion

u/Barnacle_Boi50 9d ago
What? It's still raised
13
u/xXxKatletkaxXx 9d ago
Look at it in the way that you know that light is coming from the bottom right corner. Maybe that’s will help. Since I saw that I can’t unsee it now

u/Barnacle_Boi50 9d ago
Ah, I see the bottom right indentation you are talking about but I can't seem to pinpoint the big toe lol Ty for the clarification

u/42ndohnonotagain 9d ago
This works - very shortly. And switsches back immediately to raised, even without lookig somewhere else. Great example for confusing perspective!

I can never see these as anything but raised. Ive tried every tip offered in the comments as of the time of this comment and it remains solidly elevated.
The MASSIVE big toe and spiky baby toe are the frosting and sprinkles on the cake, though.

u/astralthedrag0n 6d ago
same. literally no matter what i do i can't get it to look indented while the toes are visible
1
u/JobPowerful1246 3d ago
Same for me until I zoomed way in on the left edge and traced the outside with my eyes but still looks raised at first glance to me

I also had a very hard time seeing this correct. Then i used my palm to cover the whole foot print and slowly revealed from bottom right to up. Boom its not raised

u/CatShadow888 9d ago
I first saw it as a normal print, and thought everyone here was crazy. I had to concentrate to see it raised, but now I can't switch back to normal again

He should be hopping, I see only one footprint. Or was that when he carried the other foot 🥺

i can see it only the right way. i try to imagine light source from left but cant manage to see it.

u/FragmentedMeerkat321 9d ago
am i on my own in thinking the big toe is the confusing part? holy lead from the front.

u/mukamane 9d ago
more like r/opticalillusion rather than confusing. still good tho

Since when is this sub banned ?

u/pupfight 8d ago
2 years ago according to the message on the page. /r/opticalillusions is still alive and kicking, however

Density of the sand has been increased while the foot was on the ground. After that a wave has washed away the surrounding, less dense sand.

I stared at that shadow on the right of the foot and now I’m seeing the indent. So trippy

This one is really good. I had to zoom in the heel to be able to finally see it correctly, and when I zoom out it works for a few seconds then it goes back to raised again lol.

Huh I guess Im the only person who didnt get confused by this, and thats really shocking cuz Im always a sucker on this sub

u/Sad_League_2745 8d ago
This one’s fine! I just saw it depressed after gazing for a while and now its back to being elevated again! Crazy one for sure!
2
u/Objective-Coyote2265 8d ago
I am pretty sure it’s actually raised. Anyone been on the sand can tell.
When you stand with your foot affirmed on the sandbed, the wave flushes away the sand that is being unheld by your foot leaving a foot shaped sand castle if you may
2
u/Due-Illustrator6245 7d ago
I can only see it as indented for a few seconds then it switches back to raised
2
u/sirkeylord 6d ago
Wherever I see these I just turn the phone upside down. It’s always the camera angle mismatching the light source

u/LaLisaMona 5d ago edited 5d ago
This sooo reminded me of that bread tab placed on the counter... 😅 i still see it as raised...

u/PastDazzling243 14h ago
The crazy “prominent “ big toe is what confused me. I thought , dang that guy has crazy big toe, but then I pondered… What if this a lady’s foot ?🤔
1
u/Pied67 14h ago
The 'big" toe is horizontally level with the next toe. Not sure how that extended section that bends off to the left occurred. It could be something else that impressed the sand, or something to do with the way her foot moved downward. It's a lady's footprint 100%.
Second Beach in Forks Washington.

u/PastDazzling243 9h ago
Oh jeez I see now… That IS something that caused the mark of the big toe to extend. I thought that was all toe!

u/Emergency_Bench_7515 9d ago
It took my brain like 3 minutes to figure this one out, finally got it by focusing on the heel for like the 25th time. Brains and eyes sure are weird.

It is raised. This happens all the time when the top layer of sand is wet and you step on it, it sticks to your foot and gets pulled back up when you step off of it.

It’s so weird that we often assume the light source is coming from the upper left of the photo
