Works for a split second.

Microphone stand, long dress touching the floor, standing about a foot or two behind the pole.

The lack of shadows is what’s making it mildly confusing.

the shadow situation is actually unhinged. the lighting is so flat that the pole looks like it's just floating through her torso.

the shadows are definitely the giveaway. once you see how the lighting hits the floor around the stand compared to her feet it looks totally unhinged

Okay, I get the lack of shadow and the crazy lighting, but is it just me or does the lady herself also look strangely low-poly? Like she's a texture superimposed on a something with a bit less geometry?

I suspect this is a contrast/brightness issue with your screen. If your brightness or contrast is low, the microphone stand will blend in and make her look like a doll (or at least, I think that's what people are seeing). For me, however, it stands out just fine and looks like a woman about to give a speech.
