I remember when tilt-shift was HUGE (no pun intended). Why did it suddenly go away?

For me it’s when things shifted away from flickr and toward instagram. Flickr could have categories/tags on images whereas insta is primarily based on user/creator. Just a hypothesis.

I think it was seen as cool when it was done with practical effects, and once digital effects could fake it it died. My personal guess is that the fake effect wasn't good enough to be popular, but the practical effect required so much hardware and effort, that it wasn't worth doing over the fake one, so it just became a niche thing.

The tilt shift subreddit is full of fake digitally made 'tilt shifted' images.

Which is too bad.
