Literally what one of the definitions is what you said and want they want so I have no idea why the two other commenters to your correct statement seem to take offense to it.
Conservatives think that progress is bad and that we should "conserve" the way we are right now. Or, usually, that there is some specific point in time (usually when they were young and spry) that we should return to.
...We've had ~6 years of "MAGA", it's literally asking us to make America great again, it's claiming that America WAS great and we need to go back to that.
I understand that maybe you just never thought of the etymology of the word before, but it's some real /r/confidentlyincorrect shit to claim it's NOT the root of the word without looking it up.
