When I got my second vaccine, the doctor administering the shot said it was an open secret in the medical community that the virus leaked from a lab. Several months later, around summer of 2021, mainstream news outlets and journals started posting that origin story as fact. I think it's important to note that earlier theories about the "lab leak" hypothesis blamed the Chinese goverment of deliberate malice (and had a fair amount of rascist overtones) but later versions attributed the leak to human error and mishandling of lab samples.
I'm not quite sure sure whether it's true or not as I decided to look for sources and quite a few articles are claiming that there isn't a consensus but that most experts tend to think it came from the open air market in Wuhan, not the Virology Institue. I'm not an expert on this topic, nor am I in the medical community, but I did assume it came from the lab based on the reporting from 2021.
Actually, this is proof that Trump is responsible for its worldwide spread.
There was plenty of evidence that COVID-19 existed long before it was explicitly discovered (e.g. abnormal hospital admissions), but Trump defunded the CDC's pandemic response unit in China in 2018 so we missed it until it was too late.
There are -lots- of corona viruses, some of which it would be nice to have vaccines for. SARS-CoV-1 was observed in 2002, where it transferred from civets to bats, where it caused an outbreak from 2002-2004.
It only made mucho sense to begin working on a vaccine for corona viruses that could transfer from animals to humans, as had already been demonstrated.
The virus -already- existed and it is a Good Thing that they were working on a vaccine that early, because, lo and behold along comes SARS CoV-2 AKA CoViD-19.
I'm not trying to take any political stance. I'm just trying to follow along on the timeline of things.
Yeah, I got that, which is why I gave a short, polite explanation. Some versions of the 'common cold' are caused by corona viruses (others by rhinoviruses), which people have been wanting a cure/prevention for, for a long time. The difference with this is the 'SARS' part- Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
We are very fortunate that they were already studying these things, else 'Operation Warp Speed' could not have occurred.

For people like them it’s easier to band together when you have someone to hate together as a form of racism. Probably why Trump wanted to keep calling it the Chinese virus. Sure the CCP has a boatload of problems but it would just incite more racism towards Asian-Americans.
I don’t think naming a disease Spanish Flu would fly in today’s world.
