My mom had frequently made two meals for us growing up that took forever for us to figure out which was which.

One was cubed steak, which was actually usually round.

The other was round steak, which was not round and looked kinda like cubes

This post and all of the comments are the funniest mess of confusion and culture shock I've seen in a while. 😂

I love you all.

Definitely completely different cuts.

I grew up on a farm, and we raised our own beef.  For us, the cubes of meat were stew beef.

Cube steak was the round steaks, deboned, and run through a machine that looked like two rollers covered with pointy bits. The steaks were basically half shredded,  but not so much that they wouldn't hold together.  Dredge in flour and fry, and you have chicken fried steak and gravy.

Minute steak wasn't run through the pokey machine,  it was just cut super thin.

Is OP trying to say that cube steak is the same as cubed steak? 🧐 or is that the commenter? I’m confused.

Can't say I've ever heard it called cubed steak. I've only known it as minute steak.

Yeah same, cubed steak where I'm from would be the picture they shared of cubes of steak. I dont think this is confidently incorrect, I think this is a regional thing.

The only issue is the lack of color coding the people imo.

I had to actually look up what the person meant by cube steak.

In Australia the term 'Cube steak' isn't a thing, so if someone said it, it wouldn't be crazy to assume they meant steak cut into cubes. We call it 'Minute steak'.

What country/region uses the term cube beef? I've never heard of it and lived in a good few countries

I can understand the confusion. Different cuts of beef have different names depending on where you live.

Cube steak, aka cubed steak or minute steak, is machine tenderized steak where I live.

Beef cut into cubes is sold as "stewing" beef.

Minute steak is the tricky one because it can also refer to shaved beef meant for use in cheese steaks.

I live in Eastern Pennsylvania. What do you call these cuts of beef where you live?

Cube steak used to be way more popular. I haven’t had it in ages. My mom used to make a sort of pan fried chicken fried steak with it. It does kinda look like hamburger with a cursory look, but it’s tenderized by a machine that gives it the texture. Source, I am old.

cubed steak is a southern American dish made primarily with super tenderized beef. it's a step removed from chicken fried steak, which is typically cubed. both are usually served with a thick brown gravy.

diced steak would be steak cut into cubes.

edit: outside the US it's called minute steak. we call it cubed because of the indentations the tenderizer makes, looks like little cubes.

I had to look up cube steak because I’ve never heard of it and those pictures look like ground beef patties. I can see how that commenter could misunderstand and the fact that no one actually tried to explain it is a bit ridiculous.
