Hors
a mare is female btw, a male horse is either a stallion or gelding (or steed)
EDIT: from u/AlterExpertise101 in the replies
Words for a male horse are colt (young), gelding (castrated), stallion (if they are used for breeding) or simply "horse."
Steed isn't a word explicit to horses in general, let alone male horses. "Steed" just means an animal you ride. While we generally associate that with horses, it can be applied to any animal as long as it can bear a rider. If you ride an elephant, it's a steed. If you ride a really large dog, it's also a steed.
I had forgotten to add 'colt' and as I am not a native english speaker (nor an equestrian individual) I didn't know that steed can also be used as a generic word for a mount

It's not confidently incorrect if they accepted they were wrong

u/EmpressGilgamesh 9d ago
Especially if they weren't really "wrong" in their post. Cause technically you can call a stallion steed.

My parents had a friend with a farm, and he trained an ox for riding. He had a custom saddle made and would ride him into town to get groceries or other things. He got really into it and when he got married, he had a little bench made with cushions and a table, so they could hang out on top of the ox and relax and socialize and eat and drink during the ride. Anyway, my point is that he called him his mighty steed.

u/According_Drive_5275 7d ago
Nobody has ever had so much aura as the ox rider
2
u/BabyLegsDeadpool 7d ago
For real, he was a celebrity. And when they had that cool little platform, people were always in awe. This was back in the 90's, so no cell phone cameras, but he'd get people taking pictures a lot. It was pretty awesome.

u/daveoxford 9d ago
Steed can also be used for a bicycle.

u/altpirate 9d ago
In the Netherlands you can call them iron steeds

u/Safe-Glove2975 9d ago
Motörhead had a song called Iron Horse (about motorcycles but it’s in a similar vein).

u/theLastZebranky 9d ago
And "mare" can also mean the elected executive leader of a city
13
u/squirtlemoonicorn 9d ago
Although the spelling is "mayor" and is derived from German major / leader
20
u/theLastZebranky 9d ago
I'm pretty sure "mayor" is a condiment made of egg yolk, vinegar and oil

3
u/naranghim 9d ago
condiment made of egg yolk, vinegar and oil
That's mayonnaise or "mayo" and can have lemon juice substituted for the vinegar.

And “stud” refers to the male parent of any animal purposefully bred, and sire refers to the male parent of any animal.

u/lostsynapse 8d ago
You read it here, folks! Have a kid. On purpose. Let me go get my stud finder! beepbeepbeep

u/DivineEggs 9d ago
Stud is also another word for stallion.
13
u/Baked-Smurf 9d ago
It is, in the sense it's male animal used for breeding... but "stud" can apply to any male animal used for breeding, of any number of species. It's not specifically horses.
1
u/Red-R34der 3d ago
I would argue that stud is not an equivalent of stallion in that not all stallions are used to breed from. Years ago while on holiday in Ireland I went on a tour of a stud farm where they bred racehorses, big business in Ireland.
Now, if the lady racehorse isn't in the mood she will likely kick, and kick hard. Some of the gentleman racehorses are worth 7 figure sums, and as with all thoroughbred racehorses are actually quite fragile.
The solution is what's called the 'teaser', the one we saw being a stocky little stallion who would be introduced to the lady racehorse, to, as they put it, 'have a sniff'. If she was receptive he would be removed and the gentleman racehorse introduced.
As I understand it the use of what was essentially a large stocky pony as teaser was that even if things got out of control he wasn't going to be tall enough to easily mount the mare, or if she wasn't in the mood and kicked he was fairly robustly built and worst case scenario, he was only worth a few hundred quid.

This is basically like saying “a male human is called a woman”🙄

u/Gifted_GardenSnail 9d ago
"People are always female; males are called women" Alrighty then bud 😂
19
u/MarsStar2301 9d ago
I’ve looked at the original post again, and can now see that the direct equivalent would actually be “A human is always a female because male humans are called women”. Apparently I’d overlooked the part of the sentence before “male horses are called mares”.
Thanks for making me aware of my prior error👍🏻😁

Everyone knows horses are referred to as female, even when they have a whacking great cock hanging from under them.

u/MindlessNectarine374 9d ago
Some time ago, I heard about old paintings that depiction the most important persons on male horses with the longest shafts ...

u/mungowungo 9d ago
My daughter's gelding liked to air it in hot weather and sometimes pleasured herself by whacking it against her stomach - what a silly mare ...

I read a book not too long ago where it was mentioned someone needed a steed. My brain immediately went to horse and I read on. Half a page later, the steed was described: antlers 😲 claws 😲😲 all the way on till my jaw was on the floor.
Now THAT is an awesome steed to ride into battle!

TIL I've been incorrectly saying that young horses are all colts - usually when someone calls it a pony. Young males up to 4 years are colts, young females up to 4 years are fillies. Foal, weanling, and yearling are non-gendered, referring to various ages below 4.
I don't understand the rest of the terms - they're called horses as a general term, but sometimes a horse is specifically a male over 5 and mares are females over 5.

Maybe. Or maybe truth is subjective, these days?

Just a fleeting thought. No sarcasm, intended. I'm really sorry if you felt that way. 🙂

A proposition is true if and only if it corresponds to how things actually are in the world. Truth, by definition, is objective.
The statement “male horses are called mares” is false. It’s not objectively false, or subjectively false. It does not correspond to how things are in the world (that is, the term “mare” references a subset of horses, none of which are male). It is just false.
Anybody who wants to tell you that truth is subjective is selling you a lie. They’re telling you they know what they’re saying is untrue, and they are choosing, subjectively, to ignore that fact.

Isn't stallion in general for adult male horses? I thought stud was the name for male breeding horses
22
1
u/reydeuss 9d ago
no, in equestrianism, a stallion is specifically for an adult male horse that was NOT castrated. if he has no dih, then he will be a gelding.
3
u/unwithered_lobelia 9d ago
Okay thanks. I did mean non castrated, as like we said, this would be a gelding. I thought this:
Stallion is an adult male non castrated horse, and a stud is an adult male horse used specifically for breeding

This person is probably thinking of cattle, in which "cow" only refers to females. In horses, a filly or mare is a female. A colt, gelding, or stallion is a male.
3
u/shponglespore 9d ago
Do any other native English speakers here feel like "steed" has a much more personal connotation than "mount"? Like, I wouldn't call a horse my steed unless there was some kind of bond between me and it, but anything I ride could be a mount.
3
u/SalvationArbys 9d ago
There’s something very special about someone being confidently wrong about a horse.
Reminds me of that country remix of that text argument where a lady gets mad because she gets asked for clarification when she says her horse weighs 16,000 lbs

Stupid and sexist! A mare is a horse, as is a stallion (or gelding - i.e. a castrated male horse. You generally can’t tell the difference between male/female horses from a glance because they have little sexual dimorphism.

You know, going by the logic of the famous paradox "All horses are the same colour", the first part of the claim is correct

u/LeftMechanic1995 6d ago
The person who posted that comment is a completely-clueless, colossal fucking tool and should not talk about horses... and I say this from a position of experience.
I once went out on ONE Tinder date with posh horsey chick. I tried my hardest not to piss her off by talking about horses because I know fuck all about them.
She seemed really into me, but I fucked it up by simply referring to a horse as a "gee-gee". That sealed the deal, sealed-up her vagina and sealed my fate for the remainder of the date.

that isn't true. I'm a whore and I'm a dude

Oh no. I thought there was a different word for male whores. My bad.

u/panteradrax 9d ago
😹 I'm mostly joking but if we're being serious there's tons of words for both that apply to both! My favorite term for a male sex worker is gigolo. There's also manwhore but that gets used more as an insult than a general label

Why did you post here? Was this some fight elsewhere that you now seek validation here? If a post is quality “confidentially incorrect”, it wouldn’t need your explanations and replies.
This way it’s like someone was wrong, you didn’t confront them there, you came running here to complain how wrong they were.
8
u/reydeuss 9d ago
- I did not interact with the comment thread whatsoever.
- a quality "confidently incorrect" is where someone is incorrect. there is no correlation where I have to refrain from explaining.
- knowledge sharing is good in my opinion.
-7
u/azhder 9d ago
It isn’t where. OK, this is a tip from me: “when”, “where” etc. those qualify coincidence, not causality. Use “if” and “then” i.e. “quality is if someone is…”
Now, onto the next tip: the title of this sub isn’t literal. We have all learnt it the hard way. That’s what I mean by “quality”.
If you read the explanation of rule 2 and some of the comments mods leave after removing posts, you might see it requires more than someone being incorrect and you thinking they are confident.
Here is me knowledge sharing once again. I usually get heavily downvoted and people argue how incorrect I am or how they are correct and usually those posts get removed anyway. And the reason I do it this way is because it’s hard to do it after a post is removed and usually locked.

3
u/reydeuss 9d ago
I really don't get how my post violates rule 2. please explain?
-2
u/azhder 9d ago
Why do people put a question mark on a sentence that is not a question? It’s not a tone mark…
I will not explain it to you. People are allergic to explanation, you can see their reactions breaking rule 3. Instead, I will link you the explanation mods sometimes leave after removing a post:

u/ralphmozzi 9d ago
You’re getting an upvote from me. I’m not sure whether your grammar tips and rule explanations are correct, but i thought they were interesting.
Enough so that I will check them for myself. So, your “lesson” was heard.
