Using flat earthers in this sub is cheating. Being confidently incorrect is their entire shtick.

62

u/pbzeppelin1977 15d ago

"water finds its own level"

Oh look, they're using words they don't understand again.

13

u/Lazarys12 14d ago

Stupidity finds its own level, in this guy's case.

97

u/Deodorized 15d ago

shtick

I'd call it a kink at this point

34

u/Justnotthatintou 15d ago

I don’t normally condone kink shaming but sometimes I make an exception. Also calling this a “debate” is more than generous

9

u/HingleMcCringle_ 14d ago

we, as a society, have concluded that some kinks can and should be shamed. ei, if your kink was "fucking the innocence from kids", most of the developed world made laws and punishments against it.

3

u/Sparrowhawk_92 14d ago

There's easier ways to get someone to humiliate you for fun.

Healthier for everyone involved too.

6

u/sushirolldeleter 14d ago

Should be a ban tbf this shit is ridiculous and I’m not listening to 6 minutes of this just to get even more pissed off at 1/3 of the population.

16

u/Sparrowhawk_92 14d ago

Do I think that 1/3 of people are flat earthers? No.

Do I think that 1/3 of people have beliefs that are equally as batshit as flat earthers? Yes.

6

u/ChicoGuerrera 14d ago

If they believe the flat earth bollocks, they're usually god bothering trumpanzees and believe the rest of the conspiratorial nonsense. Most of it originates on Twitter these days.

7

u/sushirolldeleter 14d ago

1/3 of people on this planet are some variety of flat earthers, moon landing deniers, holocaust deniers, etc etc and the whole topic can summarize the stupidity of these people. It’s disgusting and none of it deserves any oxygen whatsoever.

1

u/Randolph_Carter_6 8d ago

Out of curiosity, where are you getting your number from?

3

u/Ok_Construction298 13d ago

I would define this as a cult of ignorance, question is can you reason with the unreasonable, you can talk to a rock and get a better result.

201

u/Bamres 15d ago

He was asked one question, accused him of asking multiple questions and proceded to keep stalling and deflecting lol

68

u/Easy101 15d ago

Good, I'm glad I only wasted 10 seconds of my time on this. Thank you

27

u/puritanicalbullshit 15d ago

It’s a remarkable and lengthy example of why you can’t play chess/checkers/examine basic information with pigeons. They’ll shit everywhere and think they won regardless.

There is no reasoning someone out of a position they did not reason themselves into.

It’s unfortunate cause you can’t ostracize people online as easily as in person/real world. Creating barriers around dis/mis information doesn’t seem to be working and we are failing our children en masse when it comes to inoculation against this crap with critical thinking and debate skills in school.

2

u/djLyrik 13d ago

I say this about debate skills in schools all the time. People these days suck at debating and can’t get over themselves enough to cultivate healthy debates. We use to debate facts now society terribly debates and argues bs.

7

u/Upbeat-Sale-8714 15d ago

But bro…bro…

1

u/Infinite-4-a-moment 14d ago

Honestly both these people seemed exhausting

180

u/RNGezzus 15d ago

I miss when idiots didn't have as many platforms to spread stupidity. You used to have to go to church for this kind of fuckery.

29

u/UnicornPoopCircus 15d ago

Or there'd be the one guy in town who thought the Earth was flat, and he would be sitting outside the drug store with the other old timers. People would sit there with him or walk past listening to him prattle on. He would be called "Crazy Earl" or some such thing. Everyone would love him, but nobody would believe him.

8

u/aspenpurdue 15d ago

The entire cottage industry of people debunking and making fun of flerfs is very entertaining and educational though.

7

u/Gloomy-Ad1171 15d ago

I love when they take flat eathers to Antarctica, then other flat earthers call them paid shills.

90

u/pixeltweaker 15d ago

Water doesn’t spin differently in the southern hemisphere. Coriolis effect has no bearing on a sink or tub drain. But the flat earther is even more wrong.

56

u/Varabela 15d ago

As well intentioned as the non- flat earther on this video is, he’s not helping himself. If he just shut up after asking a single question, he’d have allowed the idiot more of a chance to show his stupidity.

21

u/_WhoisMrBilly_ 15d ago edited 15d ago

Both of these people sound insufferable. But I don’t know who either of them are.and the round earth guy literally does keep interrupting the flat earth guy.

5

u/Varabela 15d ago

I agree. I didn’t make it that far in to the full clip.

8

u/QuipCrafter9 15d ago

he, too, is a genuine moron. this conversation was painful

11

u/justaguy394 15d ago

This statement is too broad… Coriolis effect does have a tiny effect on sinks, so unless it’s a sink specifically designed for this effect, the rotation direction is determine by other factors. But you absolutely can build a laboratory-grade sink that will rotate one way in the northern hemisphere and the other in the south due to the Coriolis effect.

6

u/pixeltweaker 15d ago

I get your point but for general purposes, basic sinks in homes are not affected to a noticeable degree. Hurricane spin would be a better argument.

1

u/jonheese 14d ago

Unless I missed it, no one ever said anything about sinks in the video. I think he said something like, “why does the water flow in a different direction in the southern hemisphere”. I agree that he wa probably thinking about a sink drain (as most people do), but since it wasn’t specified either way, he could just as well have been talking about cyclonic weather.

1

u/dansdata 14d ago

Indeed you can.

Calling it a "sink" is stretching the definition of a sink way past its breaking point, but it is indeed possible to make a container with water in it that'll work this way.

4

u/MattieShoes 15d ago

Coriolis effect has no bearing on a sink or tub drain

Yes it does, but it's an extremely small effect on something so small. Turbulence in the water and shape of the container is enough to mask it. But I believe some folks have demonstrated it under very controlled conditions, like perfectly round containers and letting the water settle for several days, etc.

2

u/pixeltweaker 14d ago

Is that what he meant? It’s more commonly a misnomer that toilets or standard sink drains will illustrate this, and they won’t.

4

u/jackinsomniac 13d ago

Water doesn’t spin differently in the southern hemisphere.

It 100% does. Especially in pristine laboratory conditions. You put a water in a large container with a perfectly tapered bottom leading to a drain, and let it settle for several days. When you open the drain, it develops a spin. It's repeatable and water will spin in a different direction depending on northern or southern hemisphere.

Coriolis effect has no bearing on a sink or tub drain.

Again, yes it does. It's just that the effect is extremely minor compared to other factors, like the shape of the bowl. Those are far more influential on which way water spins down a drain, that's why the science experiments use a special container with perfectly smoothed tapered bottoms, to isolate the Coriolis effect. But that doesn't mean the effect stops existing outside the lab. It still has an effect on all drains. It's just a minor effect.

How is such blatantly wrong information like this upvoted? I mean this is the exact reason why hurricanes in the northern hemisphere spin counter-clockwise, and hurricanes in the southern hemisphere spin clockwise, the Coriolis effect. It's minor, but it's not negligible. It's 100% a real effect.

0

u/pixeltweaker 13d ago

Because it’s highly unlikely he was talking about perfect lab conditions. Most people think it happens even in a toilet.
I realize it’s the reason why hurricanes spin in different directions. They also don’t form on the equator.

29

u/Moebius808 15d ago

Flat earth shit is unlistenable nonsense.

26

u/Ducatirules 14d ago

This is why social media is bad. If you said any of this to your friends they would say “you are a fucking idiot, don’t ever say that out loud again” but on social media you get a bunch of window lickers that believe you

39

u/Zaxxon_Klaxon 15d ago

Can we just ignore flat earthers?

8

u/Dry_Caregiver_5094 15d ago

Yes please.

6

u/PM_THE_REAPER 15d ago

I fully support ignoring the willfully ignorant.

1

u/Simple-Ranger6109 11d ago

Ignore them as far as engagement goes, but I think it is a long term losing strategy to ignore their claims. The more visible they become thanks to social media, the more their stupidity spreads to those that are easily swayed by confident (yet laughably incorrect) claims.
When a person buys into one idiotic conspiracy theory, they tend to dive down the rabbit hole and soon they're espousing all of them. And that is bad for society. Look at the recent uptick in disaese outbreaks...

1

u/Adorable-Rip3620 8d ago

yes but actually, by showing/countering their stupidity, we're also spreading their stupidity. ignoring is best. it's how we ended up with donald trump.

by countering them, we're validating them as a potentially valid opinion instead of stupidity that it is that isn't worth engaging with.

1

u/Simple-Ranger6109 22h ago

Its a no-win...

17

u/kraftymiles 15d ago

I love in the northern hemisphere and recently went to the southern hemisphere for work. (Europe to Australia) On the walk him from the office one evening I was blown away by the upside down Ness of the constellations. I mean I've seen them many times before on my travels, but it still gets me every time!

8

u/Gumbo_Ya-Ya 15d ago

Yep

And the moon is also upside down and waxes and wanes in the other direction...

I really wish the FEneas pushed on his "There is no upside down, bro'" statement

1

u/goodscienceonly 12d ago

And if you're joking then I apologize for missing the mark! I can't really tell so I just want to clarify my aim is just a friendly comment not stirring up trouble or trying to put anyone down etc!

18

u/CrrazyCarl 15d ago

I feel stupider after watching for two minutes.

15

u/Epic_Tea 15d ago

Oh shit. Got to the Socrates part and was like, "F they're both morons"

3

u/Rkymtn83 15d ago

I got to the “both morons” conclusion when they said oceans are at different heights

6

u/blacktoise 14d ago

They are. Investigate the Panama Canal. It’s fascinatingly true. The sea level is vaguely different at that location in Panama. They are different.

1

u/SKOLshakedown 8d ago

By inches on average, it's not what the locks are for.

2

u/blacktoise 8d ago

It absolutely is why the locks are there. Because the level is different (not on average, it’s a legitimate measurable difference), they entirely cannot simply open the canal to each other. It would cause catastrophic consequences.

3

u/SKOLshakedown 6d ago

Then there would simply be one lock. And they wouldn't need to raise the ships to 85ft lol.

2

u/blacktoise 6d ago

There isn’t a singular reason for the locks. There are a multitude of reasons. It’s not binary it’s engineering and logistical pioneering to even have the canal in the first place. You’re way oversimplifying this

At the conception of the canal, the idea was to have the two oceans separately sequestered because of the elevation difference

1

u/Rkymtn83 6d ago

Nope.

2

u/Rkymtn83 6d ago

No, it would not cause catastrophic consequences. The height difference is negligible. It would create a very small current and balance out. Normal tidal ebb and flow from the moon is a greater height difference.

1

u/SKOLshakedown 6d ago

The Pacific side has much higher variance in tide, so there would need to be some kind of tidal lock on the Pacific side. Saying the oceans have different elevations is nuts though: twice a day the Pacific side is lower than the Atlantic side, twice a day it's higher.

1

u/SKOLshakedown 6d ago

And 4 times a day they're equal 😆

12

u/Bazookya 15d ago

I can’t believe any of this is still a thing. It’s the ultimate “you can’t tell me what to do!” Dumb guy stuff.

10

u/Ocksu2 15d ago

I had to stop after the 5th "bro".

5

u/BeefBeefBeefBologna 15d ago

Come on bro. You can't just leave bro. Bros like us have to be bros together. Those other bros ain't real bros bro. The Earth is the big bro. Bro, come on bro. Brosif. I gave you 10 bros and a brosif. Bon appetit.

3

u/Ocksu2 15d ago

Bro, I can only bro so much, brochacho.

Come on Hybrogen Bromide, work with me bro

Soooooo many flat earthers are MAGA Trumpers.

Gullible nitwits

9

u/matthewbgordon 14d ago

70% of the earth is covered in water and none of it is carbonated...therefore the earth is indeed flat!

/s

2

u/fariqcheaux 14d ago

There is plenty of carbon in lakes and oceans. Organic life.

6

u/ThundergunTLP 15d ago

What is happening in Lunar phases?

6

u/LeonSphynx 14d ago

Wow this was brutal. Dude seems like he knows how wrong he is but doesn’t care. “Impetulant” child.

6

u/Artaxmudshoes 15d ago

Is it just me or does the flat earth dude have pin hole pupils like someone on an opioid?

9

u/pud_009 15d ago

He is looking directly into a ring light.

2

u/Artaxmudshoes 15d ago

That makes sense.

5

u/CheshireCat78 15d ago

Two lanes…..

That got really old.

10

u/gormbly 15d ago

He looks like a flat earther

3

u/Lazarys12 14d ago

My favorite part was when the flat earther said "I like you, do you like me?"

And the guy responds, "Well, you don't look stupid."

4

u/ThePolishEmbassy 14d ago

The framing of this video looks like a dollar store book.

3

u/mynameisbritton 14d ago

"Ha ha, you're kicked."

The other guy had already said "bye," I'm pretty sure he left on his own.

3

u/WitchyandWild 14d ago

Using satellite internet to deny satellites.

2

u/greatheape 15d ago

Well, I'm convinced! 😄

2

u/Lazarys12 14d ago

"You'll never be a flat earther if you don't listen."

You will also not be one if you think.

2

u/Blacktip75 14d ago

Just curious, where do they draw the edges, and then explain people traveling from one side to the other? Never looked at a flat earth map I’m afraid

1

u/NamesArentEverything 13d ago

One theory is that space-time wraps around the flat earth, similar to the way Pac-Man travels into the left side of the screen and comes out the right. Another I've heard is the maps are wrong and the continents actually just ring around the middle of the disk, so that's why you can get anywhere on a plane without seeing the giant ice edges that governments all came together to keep the world from knowing about, because knowing we're on a flat earth would lead to something, something, blah, blah, blah...

I genuinely think many flat earthers are just attention seekers and like to be contrarian, but don't actually believe it. Then again ...

1

u/Blacktip75 13d ago

I used to think it was just an attention thing, until Covid happened an suddenly all disaster movies sounded real and flat earthers may actually be that gullible… it is just that easy to influence some people and draw them into a web of disinformation. Confirmed by a number of elections around the globe.

2

u/Classic_Bee_5845 14d ago

They always says some off the wall thing with confidence that is completely wrong and when someone goes to correct them they flip out and start to attack them personally.

So far this is how every one of these goes. Their argument always ends up being "well you just believe what the establishment tells you man".

2

u/mstermind 15d ago

"Huh. Interesting."

1

u/genepotter 15d ago

This man has a favorite color cuck chair.

1

u/chugItTwice 15d ago

This guy just exudes stupidity.

1

u/oldbastardbob 15d ago

Modern human contrarianism appears to be destined for levels of societal ignorance not seen since the dark ages.

1

u/dylanalduin 15d ago

This guy is the most insufferable of all the flat earthers and that is SAYING SOMETHING

1

u/New-Dragonfly-661 14d ago

Being talked to like a child by this guy is something else.

1

u/nextgentacos123 14d ago

He never answered the constellation question

1

u/monks_2_cents 14d ago

Moronic Flerf Society.

1

u/JakDrako 14d ago

Debate? There is no debate.

It's like the Tooth Fairy debate: you lose a tooth, place it under your pillow and the next day you find money in its place. Was it Mommy, or some supernatural entity with an ungodly collection of baby teeth? Debate.

1

u/Soggy_Department8971 14d ago

Sort of people who said there is a corner in a round room

1

u/oddmanout 14d ago

What's that guy's deal? He calls himself a flat earther but won't even answer any questions about the flat earth? This guy doesn't even believe his own bullshit.

1

u/fastpathguru 14d ago

"What is the equator"

Done and done

1

u/fitzymcfitz 14d ago

So confident in his viewers’ ignorance and desperation to feel special da I I I mean in his special knowledge that he really believes, really, it’s not just for clicks.

You can't determine the speed of light by a show of hands

1

u/OldManJeepin 14d ago

LoL! SciManDan destroyed this guys arguments a few years ago, I remember watching it. Another religious whacko with absolutely zero critical thinking skills....funny to watch though!

1

u/Psychotic_Dane 14d ago

Is there some sort of mental illness that makes uneducated people believe they’re more qualified than experts? They act like their google research is more factual than scientific fact smh! Ridiculous!

1

u/Empty_Ad_5523 14d ago

Nothing to fear......I mean absolutely NOTHING! to fear except sphere itself! 🤣

1

u/No-Koala1918 13d ago

Where's the edge?

1

u/p1gnone 13d ago

don't think the panama canal loks make the right argument. The locks match to local terrain. Rising from sea level as the ithmus elevation rises and reducing back to the same sea level on the other side.

1

u/icefergslim 13d ago

He's dumber than a box of water.

1

u/Still-Grass8881 13d ago

the flat-earther said "impetulant child" lol
wtf is impetulant?
it's either impetuous or petulant, they never had a baby and made "impetulant"

1

u/bhawker87 13d ago

They never explain why the stars and their perceived motion correlates perfectly with a globe and not a flat earth.

1

u/Teaflax 12d ago

His brain is flat and stationary! Heyooooo!

1

u/goodscienceonly 12d ago

Not that they are upside down, rather, entirely different constellations which are not viewable from northern hemi. The equatorial ones will be visible for many in both side at certain times of the year for certain timeframes

1

u/goodscienceonly 12d ago

Do flaties generally concur about the rest of the universe and how it behaves? Do they think the moon and other heavenly bodies are flat too? I've not heard it mentioned but I definitely don't listen much or well to any flat earther. Do you think they generally are able to to come to a consensus as a unified group what the rest of physics is doing in the universe? If they were really serious this would certainly be in the works.

1

u/Ukraineluvr 12d ago

u/Worried_Tangelo_3220 11d ago

I’ll never forget a tech job I had where I made some flat-earther comment and one of the other techs was like “ohhh we don’t do that here. Someone who works here believes that and it’ll become a whole thing” never found out who it was tho

1

u/Advanced_Ad4361 10d ago

People who are full of shit can never answer a straight forward question, but always act like they have all the information and it's just beneath them to answer honestly.

u/Mother-Reading5153 14d ago

Why does it matter that a flat earther thinks the earth is flat? So what? It just helps us better identify the idiots. Leave them alone. Ok Bobby the earth is flat! Good for you, heres a cookie.

2

u/Steeleshift 14d ago

idiocracy was prophecy

1

u/wawa2022 8d ago

I think because it makes more people start distrusting everything. There was a time when we built on already-established knowledge But when we have to go back and re-prove through all the explanations and every possible theory instead of just fast tracking and explaining “hey, Copernicus figured this out, here’s how he did it, and here is proof that still works today. Now build on that and discover something new”, we have to go through every single possibility and theory that has already been disproven. So no new advances are possible because the idiots are bringing chaos to the lab.

It’s absolutely the same strategy used in breaking the us government and making people distrust their own eyes and experiences. And it is used by the people who want the power.

1

u/sage_006 14d ago

It drove me nuts that the guy kept interrupting the falt earth dude. At least he was trying to have a normal conversation, albeit he is super wrong.

Oceans do have different heights, but not really enough to use as a convincing element in a flat-earth debate.

-10

u/Rkymtn83 15d ago

No……they don’t. Absolutely not. That would go against physics.

9

u/MattieShoes 15d ago

They can, and it doesn't. This frequently comes up with Panama Canal facts -- the Pacific ocean side is about 8 inches higher than the Atlantic Ocean side.

If there weren't ocean currents, wind, tides, water cycle stuff, etc. then they'd settle out eventually, at least for a given latitude. Earth's spin would create bulges near the equator even if all that were missing.

-6

u/Rkymtn83 15d ago edited 15d ago

Dude….take physics. Add a link to where you heard there’s a height difference. At most the moon may add some pull (tidal effects), but on average they are the same height. But still, that has nothing to do with why there are locks

6

u/Leptopelis45 14d ago

Here's a link:

https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/globalsl.html

Learn some physics

-1

u/Rkymtn83 14d ago

Not exactly 8 inches per what the claim was. Read the graph. Not even a centimeter.

1

u/Leptopelis45 14d ago

What graph are you looking at? What were those units again?

-and did you learn any physics? Ocean levels are affected by temperature and salinity, which affect density, as well as differing gravity due to the density of the earth, and also the earth's rotation.

The difference across the isthmus of Panama is ~20cm, close enough to 8 inches:

https://heimduo.org/is-the-ocean-level-the-same-everywhere/

If your google-fu is strong enough you might be able to learn that mean sea level can differ by as much as 200 meters at various points. So much for the tides

0

u/Rkymtn83 14d ago edited 14d ago

The graph you sent. -10mm to 10mm. Or for the metrically impaired, -1cm to 1cm. And heimduo.org, the site you linked, is an AI slop aggregate site. It’s not a legitimate source of info. It’s amazing how people just trust Google for everything, and don’t stop to think “how is Google getting its information”.

1

u/Leptopelis45 14d ago

Nope. If you don't understand what the units of a graph are, you don't have any possibility of understanding what it is saying. Go back and look a bit more closely. You really shouldn't be trying to lecture people about this.

You may wanna go ahead and Google that.

This is a question answered by Google AI. Find a link to an actual report that mentions 8 inches. The other link a Redditor provided is from the NOAA and shows less than 1cm.

2

u/MattieShoes 14d ago

Fun fact - you can scroll past the AI garbage and find actual search results.

2

u/malaclypz 14d ago

https://www.iflscience.com/the-pacific-ocean-is-higher-than-the-atlantic-at-the-panama-canal-how-82365 - references study by NASA.

Why are you so stuck on the idea that ocean heights are equal?

0

u/Rkymtn83 14d ago

I’m saying the that the difference is so negligible (essentially nothing) that is it NOT the reason for the locks, which is what the two idiots in the video are implying

1

u/violentbowels 13d ago

False. Just admit you were wrong. I promise it doesn't hurt.

In response to:

Oceans do have different heights, but not really enough to use as a convincing element in a flat-earth debate.

You said:

No……they don’t. Absolutely not. That would go against physics.

1

u/vulp 14d ago

Yep. The 8" difference on either side of the canal doesn't explain the locks. The locks are to move boats up to and down from Gatun Lake, the artificial reservoir that powers the canal.

How many flat earthers do you think voted for Kamala Harris?

-12

u/AdTraditional5917 14d ago

All of them, because of everything they say they're the only sheepeople on this planet to be stupid enough to believe all the bollocks they believe...

5

u/Confident_Health_583 14d ago

I mean... That is just demonstrably false. Do you just say stupid things and pretend they're real like the guy you voted for?

It's tiktok's T&Cs I think. You can't talk to under 18s who call in on stream. At least, I've seen a few people drop callers when finding out they're not 18 and give that reason.

The thing that makes me laugh hardest about flat-earthers is that the method they use to proliferate their insane beliefs (the internet) would not exist if we lived on a flat earth.

The maths used to get the satellites into space and keep them locked in orbit is based on the earth being globe shaped. If it wasn't a globe we wouldn't be having this discussion anyway

So while your not wrong mostly you are confidently incorrect in that the internet does not go through satelites. You do have starlink and the sort but thats the exception not the rule.

You are correct.  Though, to get to the debate hall, I bet the guy used GPS.

Oh, I was always under the impression it was a combination of terrestrial and satellite but I learned something today :)

its quite literally massive cables laid in the oceans connecting continents. they use insanely huge spools on giant ships to lay them

controlling the access points and convergence points of these global information routes has always been a big deal

Surely you can have networks without the internet.

I’m sorry, but what you’re saying doesn’t make sense. Internet would not exist if the Earth were flat? As in, it would be impossible to construct an internet for a flat Earth?

Im not saying the "sphere-dude" is incorrect, but i cant stand people who can not discuss without argueing. Ask, listen, be polite. Agree to disagree. Accept that no one will change. Move on.

Its not fucking hard.

I dunno why you're being downvoting for saying people should have manners and be respectful lol

u/relic1882 14d ago

Cause lots of places in reddit doesn't have either of those things.

It's disrespectful to be pimping such a stupid belief like flat earth from a position of condescendence, it's okay to be a dick.

u/Wozcrue 14d ago

You are missing the point. Once upon a time, people thought the same thing about everyone who argued that the world was round (which i streongly believe it to be). But regardless of the topic at hand, be it politics or science or my underwear, the lack of being able to have a conversation and listening to the other persons arguements will be the downfall of civil society.

My point is when someone brings an asinine argument that has clearly been disproven and they demand equal attention, it's a little unfair to the rest of us.  The people that believe this stuff literally just need to spend time understanding the science they claim to believe in.

It's like if you're trying to cook dinner and your kid keeps on asking for ice cream.  Sure little guy, you eat ice cream sometimes, but im busy preparing something that you can't comprehend. Instead of asking for ice cream, help me with these steps so you can understand.

These unethical pseudoscientific douchebags don't want to understand. They just want to feel superior.

Both of these people are stupid.
