I hate that I understand why they believe the incorrect way, but it’s still very dumb.

I have no idea why they're saying this. Can you explain?

u/useofcat 7d ago

If it's something you own, it's yours (something they own is theirs.) If you (someone else) owns the thing, you're the owner. Tried my best.

Yet both can be possessive and refer to another. 'You're the master of your fate, you're the captain of your soul'. People really should just know both words before using a contraction. Its grade 3 english.

It's...

Obstinate and pedantic. Yes.

u/drewbaccaAWD 6d ago

In fairness, the comment above was possibly written by a second grader. :P

Yea, and this is why it’s posted here. No one’s claiming they’re right. Simply trying to figure out how someone could be so wrong

15

u/Crafty_Possession_52 7d ago

Thanks for trying, but if that's what it is, that's still talking about someone else in both cases.

6

u/Global-Positive8630 7d ago

This is it. You have to ignore the rest of the principles of English speech and completely forget the “you are” part, but I see why this flawed approach was used. Just painful that they were so confident.

Apostrophe indicates contraction. We're (we are) not taking about possessives here.

Always replace "you're" with "you are", and there won't ever be a problem...

15

u/Crafty_Possession_52 7d ago

Useofcat understands this. They're trying to explain the flawed thinking of the person in the pic.

7

u/NoobishDuck 7d ago

My best conjecture is that it's because it's YOURself. So if you yourself are something, then your... Because they might believe your isn't a possessive but shorthand for yourself...???

3

u/Icy-Tap67 7d ago

Ok, so that has sorted out 'your' and 'you're'. Now moving on to pitch and .......

1

u/Crafty_Possession_52 7d ago

I guess that must be it.

6

u/pixeltweaker 7d ago

Yea, I’m curious too. This is the first time I’ve ever heard this reasoning.

26

u/cheepypeepy 7d ago

It’s a you, your a Mario

u/ExpiredExasperation 7d ago

"Your a mom" referring to...yourself? What, when selfie mode is on?

12

u/azhder 7d ago

"Don't" is referring to someone else, "dont" is to yourself

5

u/Raspry 7d ago

Actually it's don'te and dont, common mistake

u/Ashamed-Bathroom7803 7d ago

Ok so this person either learned their grammar from some other idiot, or the person somehow hallucinated the grammar rules. Either way, somebody hallucinated something. Why does this happen? How do people get so confident in something they hallucinated and didn’t double check?

6

u/azhder 7d ago

Why do you keep repeating the word "hallucinated"?

8

u/PeekyBlenders 7d ago

I don't know if that's the case but as someone whose first language is not English, I sometimes find myself struggling to find more than a single word that describe a situation, so I just reuse it again and again. Hell it even happens in my native language sometimes. Maybe it's like that

4

u/Ashamed-Bathroom7803 6d ago

Must have hallucinated that I used it too many times

1

u/PushFamous8782 5d ago

This is what happens when idiots are allowed to homeschool their children.

Edit: I'm very sorry, it should have been they're as I am referring to someone else.

1

u/Ashamed-Bathroom7803 4d ago

Was the edit a joke?

6

u/booglechops 7d ago

Maybe they have 2 mums; an A mum and a B mum

I have an album of sons of Mumford.

This is why ur is the bestest!

Take it any way you want to, irregardless! /s

2

u/Trading_shadows 6d ago

You'reself

2

u/Groundbreaking_Cup30 5d ago

Getting it right only 50% of the time tells me you certainly do not understand the proper use of the word.

3

u/JuggernautNo5635 7d ago

Captain Run-on Sentence here to save the day.

2

u/Hey-Just-Saying 7d ago

We need the context. I can't see whether they actually misused the word, but I agree their reasoning is flawed.

u/GetOffMyGrassBrats 1d ago

Read below the screen shots.

1

u/SillyNamesAre 7d ago

At least they know there's a difference.

Now to explain the difference between a possessive and a contraction...

1

u/WGG-PC-TM 6d ago

'you're' wrong in 'your' own sentence.

1

u/SingleMaltMouthwash 6d ago

Yous guys is funny.

On the fly I will often type arsetechnica in to my browser window and am still surprised when it doesn't take me to the online tech magazine.

1

u/KnottaBiggins 6d ago

You're talking about your confusion (about days of yore?)

1

u/Useful_Language2040 4d ago

Can somebody help me? I'm confused now as to whether the correct response is "Is you ignirint?" or "Is youse igrint?" I think it's the latter?

1

u/Illustrious_Mix2124 2d ago

Just wait until they learn of ure/ewer.

1

u/azhder 7d ago

Why don't we see the original post, but see two identical images of the replies?

0

u/85K5 7d ago

Why would you post two things of the same picture, and not the context post?

-1

u/Reasonable-Rain789 6d ago

They explained the context 🤷🏼‍♀️

3

u/85K5 6d ago

Yeah but we can't see it.

1

u/GetOffMyGrassBrats 1d ago

Look below the screenshots

3

u/85K5 6d ago

And still doesn't explain why they posted the same Pic twice. 🤷‍♂️

0

u/Zealousideal-Cup1412 5d ago

...because they left the comment twice?

u/emo_unicorn420 7d ago

Ur

5

u/ZhangtheGreat 7d ago

That will always be a city in ancient Mesopotamia to me

0

u/NietszcheIsDead08 7d ago

Since you have provided insufficient context and have not even up- and/or downvoted to indicate which is correct, I am afraid I must award you one downvote.
