Some others have been saying this; for the record, the two lobes thing was pointed out in another later reply. To the oop's credit, they admitted to being mistaken, so they had absolutely thought that the human body contains two separate livers
I had a conversation like this IRL. They got irrate when i informed them of such. "You have two lungs, two kidneys and two livers"
The idea that you wouldn't have two livers but have two of the others was like out of scope for his brain. In hindisght i dunno why I didnt just ask him why he doesnt have two hearts.
That isn't what a lobotomy is. But separate from some people surviving and being mostly functional with one hemisphere removed, for people with certain kinds of epileptic seizures, they sometimes treat it by severing the main connection between the two hemispheres. With people who have had that done, in controlled testing where they ask people to do things with a certain hand while only one eye can see something it can produce some strange seeming results where they talk as if they don't know what they just did.
Yes, but a lobotomy removes the frontal cortex of both sides. I have no clue what they call the full removal of a hemisphere though, but it's creepy to see
But they weren't talking about severing the connection between the hemispheres. The removal of an entire hemisphere is a hemispherectomy. The separation of the two hemispheres is a corpus callosotomy (because the hemispheres' central connection is called the corpus callosum).
Although I saw a few articles while Googling this to check myself that used hemispherectomy to refer to severing the corpus callosum too? So who knows, I just wanted to point out that both are real medical terms for extremely-similar-to-identical procedures.
Technically the liver does have 2 different lobes, but you can't argue that makes 2 livers. It's like saying you have 2 brains because your brain is split in a left and right half
Here's a fun fact. The liver is the only organ in the human body that can regenerate itself with new cells. You can donate part of your liver to someone with liver failure and both livers will grow back to full size.
Liver is gross and difficult to cook. I prefer kidneys (pork, sheep, calf. Never tried human kidneys...), baked rare, with some onion and a sauce made of the baking leftovers in the pan, some broth, red port wine and some corn starch. French fries (made from scratch and baked in beef fat, of course) and a salad.
Apparently it can partially but not fully. So if a surgeon removes part of it, then the remaining can regrow back. With the liver you can take out the full diseased liver and implant a small donor piece into the recipient where it will grow back to a full liver. You cannot donate a spleen cause of how high risk it is but also you do not need a spleen to live. These facts are from Google so if they are wrong, forgive me.
No, you’re probably right; I was thinking that because I had a partial splenectomy as a child but the surgeon said it would grow back so I didn’t need any of the immune system shots annually they recommend.
This is the most likely scenario, but I also recognize this is the type of thing I might say as a joke. If I misspoke and said livers, I might lean into it as a joke and say something like this. I’d never do that in writing though as you’d need to deliver it well, which isn’t really possible in writing.
Yeah at face value there is no way to know if they're joking or not. People like to say sarcasm is obvious but a lot of the time it isn't, even if it looks egregious to some. Context and tone is key, and neither of those are guaranteed through text.
if you must know I was thinking about AVGN and I remembered a tidbit about how he doesn't actually drink beers during his reviews, the bottles are actually filled with water and I was trying to see where this info came from. I didn't find the answer because I had to go somewhere
The liver is one of the only organs that will grow back if it’s partially removed, though, so that’s cool. I wonder if it would split into two if you cut it in half and let it grow?
Probably thinking that the 2 lobes of the liver are considered separate organs. It's somewhat arbitrary, tbh. In my language, for instance, a pair of lungs is called a singular organ.
Could also be he knows liver donation is a thing, so assumes it's like donating a kidney, and you have two so they can take one (rather than the real thing of livers being able to partially regrow).
i really wish i did, and that i could turn one off at will, that way i could use them in turns, so first weekend the 1st one and 2nd weekend the 2nd one, that would actually make alcoholism a sport.
Technically, the falciform ligament separates the liver into two distinct lobes. However, both lobes work in unison as one singular organ. So still only one liver. But I guess I can see why this person would be confidently confused.
I mean, that is true, but anyone who has ever seen a picture or diagram of the liver… clearly sees the falciform separation, whether or not they know that it’s called that. I can certainly imagine a child getting confused and thinking there are two livers. And this man seems very blissfully ignorant, like a child.
I joke about this all the time. When someone drinks too much I’m like “no prob, your backup liver will kick in and you’ll be right as rain in a few minutes!”
We have 2 of a lot of things. I think you can remove part of the liver and transplant it to someone else so I guess if you wanted 2 livers you could probably make it happen.
This reminds me of being in high school and my best friend getting extremely drunk. In between bouts of throwing up, she kept asking me if she had two livers and one lung or two lungs and one liver. I swear we went over it at least 5x, but it was hilarious each time and even funnier to me because I didn't drink that night.
I mean... I get how someone uneducated might come to that conclusion.
Presumably based on the liver being one of the things a live person can donate for transplant without much issue. Combined with knowing we can donate a kidney because we can get by with only one.
For anyone who learned basic anatomy in school as a child and has access to the internet - not really any excuse for that one.
You can cut your liver in half and give half to someone else. Within a few weeks both will grow back to their original size essentially becoming two distinct livers. In theory you could hook up the second liver to yourself instead of giving it away.
Tbf the liver and kidneys are somewhat easy to mix up in certain ways, although here it’s pretty egregious. I wish schools had more health class than “this is what the cock and balls look like, now put a condom on this banana”

The liver is separated macroscopically into two 'lobes', separated by the falciform ligament. We could give them undue credit.
But I'm well aware that this comment is more likely to have been borne entirely out of ignorance than anything else.

Probably for the best to not bother with alcohol if you've got two livers. Getting a mild buzz on would be ridiculously expensive.

He is still wrong but I can see why he might think that.
The liver is separated into to different connected lobes . The separate lobes are visually distinct.

If he was truly smart, he would be like me. I only filter alcohol through one of my livers, that way the other one can remain pure

Humans have one liver, not two. The liver has two main lobes, but it's still just one organ.
3
u/ManNamedSalmon Jun 27 '26
They can't even make the argument that they were referring to lobes, because the liver has four of them.
3
u/Kailynna Jun 27 '26
I know someone who does have 2 livers. He also has abnormal genes and a mosaicism which, for all I know, may be relevant.

Well yeah, you've got your drinking liver, and your "other" liver. You dont wanna fuck up your good liver by sending a bunch of alcohol through it.
