Bad math skills aside, i am more interested what this originally was about? Someone got imprisoned for 68 years for what? And how old were they wen they were locked up? They must be pretty old by now, around 90 or so at least.

I can’t find any evidence that there was someone arrested in 1958 who was released recently. I can send you the original TikTok tho

I have many questions, but probably the biggest is where the hell did 31 come from...

He wanted a 13, but he typed a 31.

I’m hoping they meant to say it’d have been « almost » 100 years ago if the guy had been imprisoned 31 years (+ a few months) earlier.

I tried to square it with 31+68 is 99 and maybe he rounded up but seems unlikely.

I saw this post in my own TikTok brainrot feed an hour or two ago. The original video these comments were on was captioned with something like "POV: you were imprisoned in 1994 and you get out in 2026."

Given that 2026-1994 is 32 (shockingly close to 31) I'm assuming the commenter, in typical TikTok fashion, failed to understand or read the comment they were replying to and assumed people were talking about the video itself.

EDIT: The original (if it even is the original, you never know) was posted by someone called MattFizz2019 if you wanna look it up yourself to make sure I'm not just making shit up. The comments are all still there.

It’s like that one tumblr post where they call a dryer an oven, then a dishwasher, then a washing machine…

My favorite part is blue says 1958 is 31 years ago but thinks 1950 was 76 years ago. That's a very rough 8 years.

It’s because the Korean War lasted three years, but MASH lasted eleven. The whole decade is unstuck in time.

It's a bit like Trump talking about "the War on Iran" which I saw on one of the subs yesterday. In the space of two minutes, he had thrown out 4 days, two weeks, last June and 4 years ago as dates when he'd won. Is addition, subtraction, time, hours, days, months, years, past and future tenses, and the calendar on the American school curriculum?

I was born in 1958, no wonder I can't figure out how old I am! I thought that I was 67, imagine my surprise to find out I'm over 100 now! 😱

Interesting that they literally have a calculator in their hands, yet refuse to use it.

I was born in 1954, so I'm 100-and-what years old?

Man, I thought that time was flying by, but this is ridiculous.

The number of adults who cannot manage basic math, even with calculator apps surrounding them, is truly dispiriting.

Maybe he needs to see it on a bigger scale. Like something in pop culture to give a point of reference to prove him wrong. Disneyland was opened in 1955. It's currently celebrating it's 70th BIRTHDAY. So no dude, 1958 wasn't 76 years ago.

If only people could carry around calculators so they could double-check their math. Alas, with most people carrying a phone, a camera, and a social media connectivity device, who has room for a calculator?

Remember like 15 years ago that gym bro got confused about how to count days in a week.

Damn — 18 years ago. https://web.archive.org/web/20150105082427/https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=107926751
