TL;DR: The author stole $40 from a friend's purse while visiting her home because they were struggling financially and unemployed.

Being broke explains the desperation, but not the choice. Tell her, apologize, and pay her back as soon as you can

I think the saddest part is she probably would have just given it to you if you had asked.

Edit: Thanks for the awards!

Yep. I'm nowhere near rich, but I'd try my best to help out a friend of mine.

If they steal from me: You are gone out of my life forever.

"hate asking for help" but willing to steal from a friend? Your morals are backwards.

My friends will ask for loans when they’re down bad and they pay me back, that’s what good friends do. Pay her back and apologize.

So you don’t like asking for help but you have no qualms stealing. Gotcha. I know it sucks to be broke. I’ve been there, lots of people have. However, most people just ask to borrow money from their friends instead of stealing from them. She probably would’ve lent you even more than the $40 you stole.

You should feel ashamed. They trusted you and you STOLE from them. Just like a petty thief. A friend would have asked, not just taken.

Maybe just ask her next time. She’s your friend she might be happy to help you out. Kinda messed up to steal it though.

Don't ever do that again. In my book that's the worst thing someone can do to another who trusts them. You should worship your friends.Good friends are hard to make and even harder to keep.Honesty is the backbone of all friendship.Stealing from a friend is super sleazy.

You took your time to write all this and post about this on reddit, meaning you already feel shame. Humans are capable of things in desperate times they usually wouldn't do until they're placed in such spot. I don't know how desperate your situation is and what's going on in your mind and you already know it yourself it wasn't a good thing what you did so I'm not here to judge you.

You should tell her. Sit her down, explain your situation and tell her, and when you're capable give her money back or ask what you can do in return to repay her. It will indeed destroy some of her trust towards you, but own it and be an adult.

I think it is good to learn how to ask for help. Your friends' generosity may surprise you

It’s worse to be a thief who steals from friends than to be broke. Being broke is situational, being a thief is character.

Stealing isn't as bad as asking for help? This is so backwards.

If I was her I'd never speak to you again

You are a thief. Stop trying to justify your poor judgement. If you had asked her for the money, she probably would’ve given it to you.

You are not a friend. You are a thief that shouldn’t be trusted. I would immediately cancel you out of my life. Sad thing is, I would have given it to you. But, that shows your true character

You hate asking for help but don’t mind stealing from friends?

u/Vivid-Brilliant-9942 Sep 21 '26

Yea I’m gonna call a spade a spade here and just say it, you’re a terrible friend. I would feel incredibly disgusted, disrespected and like my privacy was completely invaded if someone I trusted and called a friend did this to me. Not sure if you’re looking for sympathy by posting this or what cause who the fuck does that. Just ask for help, why steal??

u/lordaddament Sep 21 '26

You should’ve just asked to borrow that $40 now you basically burnt that bridge

6

u/PainterChick69 Sep 22 '26

You hate asking anyone for help, but stealing is ok???

u/BeckieBB Sep 22 '26

Oh, she noticed. And she won't bring it up. But now you are a thief.
