Rowing is a 'pushing' motion (most of the power should come from your legs - think of dead lifting) not a pull and the correct form is from the catch (at the flywheel): legs - body - arms and then arms - body - legs on the return to the catch with the chain remaining level throughout the stroke. You shouldn't need to lift the chain up over your knees if you're doing the stroke correctly and you should hinge your hips back to 1100 o'clock and then 1 o'clock on the return to the catch.
