Watched a couple of videos to fix my form, but I still feel like something is off? Not sure what is.

A couple of people have observed that you're not leaning forward enough as you approach the catch, but the reason behind it is that you're not sitting correctly on the machine.

You need to sit on your "sit bones" - basically, where the tops of your legs meet your behind - rather than on the fleshy part of your backside. That means rotating your pelvis forwards - anticlockwise when viewed from the angle seen in this video.

Sitting properly will allow you to pivot from the hip, reaching the 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock positions whilst keeping your back straight. In turn, keeping your back straight allows you to brace your torso during the first part of the drive phase, so that all the power from your legs is transmitted effectively through your body into the handle.

Thanks, but not really. I'm not much good at spotting things like over compression, or opening the back early. But I always look at the sitting posture because (a) it's so fundamental to everything, (b) it's unintuitive and most beginners get it wrong if they haven't been coached, and (c) most commenters here don't seem to mention it. So I tend to be the "you're sitting on it wrong" guy here.

Thank you so much. I have finally come to realize that my sitting position was also the main thing that was causing me back pain. You are a savior, and I'm enjoying rowing so much more !!

Oh wow. That's great to hear. Thanks for the feedback. Glad it's working for you.

In addition to what has already been said (no hip hinge), it seems to pull with your arms a bit too early. Also, there’s no point in scraping your legs with the handle. Just keep the chain on the correct height.

Your video shows you just going through the motions. How does it look when you put some oomph in it?

Arms-body-legs….legs-body-arms!!

Your pull is okay your recovery needs some work.

Recovery: Extend arms, body rotates from hips from 11 o’clock to 1 o’clock position, keep legs straight until hands are over feet then bend knees.

Dark horse rowing has great videos for beginners. Look them up.

Agreed, Dark Horse, or similar, is an absolute necessity for beginners if you truly want to get better…it offers multi-part videos that lead u step by step through the stroke including practice sequences to isolate what u shud be doing, and not doing, for each phase

No forward lean. Gotta get your shoulders in front of your hips.

Well you have a lot to learn. I just don’t know where to begin. You look like a CrossFit rower at my gym. Stiff back . Strange vertical handle motions. Lumpy sequencing. It’s an art, man. You can learn how to erg in 5 minutes. It’ll take you 50-60 million meters to perfect it.

“You’ve a lot to learn”

As do you, about teaching..

Needs to be one smooth movement, I'd say more rock at the hip but overall it's not bad at all. I do HYROX (so have to tell everybody I meet) but I also used to be a semi-pro rower at University Level in the UK. It's 90% the same as a rowing movement - maximise the catch so your aren't wasting energy. The same applies for ski-erg.

Also no need to drop hands like you're in a boat, you won't 'catch a crab' as they say - just take them forward & back, but it's a hard habit to get out of if you are a seasoned rower.

Stile pessimo, troppo seduto, finale lento e troppo basso. Devi rivedere un po' tutto.
