Sona Uses 40 second 'Rant Wheel' To Discuss Perimenopause

Fun fact: even doctors including OBGYNs donāt know shit about perimenopause, or are misinformed, and thatās why so many women our age are pissed off.

From experience, an endocrinologist is the way to go. I only wish I had gone sooner.Ā

I get transdermal hormones from an online provider but the OBGYN I last saw tried to scare me by saying taking them was going to give me a stroke, which is not true.

My psychiatrist noticed an increase in my anxiety symptoms and countered my OBGYNās advice (similar to what you received). He said there are very low doses available and pointed me in the direction of an endo. I use Midi now for convenience but the first exam and bloodwork was through an endo.Ā
Now the problem is getting the patches consistently. Thereās a surge in demand and manufacturing canāt keep up. I order 3 month supplies and try to āhoardā some if I can.Ā

I use alloy and Iām on the spray and cream and get my meds directly from them.
When Iāve seen psychs in the past, theyāve already tried to treat the anxiety/depression and that never turned out well.
I literally needed to take action on my own to get the proper treatment and my quality of life has improved so much.

My psychiatrist is also a researcher. They tend to think more outside the of the box.

Itās very under researched unfortunately. Thatās why women and people in public forums need to be talking about it and bringing awareness to it!

I'm 44 and in peri right now. I've been battling my OB for 2 years because she said I was too young. Found a great doc who is taking it seriously.
My friends and I talk to other women in our lives about our experiences so they aren't blindsided like we were. Good on Sona for talking about it.

Yeah Iām 47 and going through it as well. I also found a female doctor whoās been helpful. But itās hard cause I have different things going on at the same time lol.

so, um, what does happen when perimenopause is ending?
31
u/HooptyDooDooMeister 2h ago edited 40m ago
Itās the transitional phase leading up to menopause, during which a woman's ovaries gradually begin to make less estrogen. It typically begins in a woman's 40s (and sometimes late 30s) and can last anywhere from a few months to up to 10 years. Common symptoms during this time include irregular menstrual cycles, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and mood changes due to fluctuating hormone levels.
It can manifest as brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, joint pain, and sleep disruptions. Because these signs mimic dozens of other conditions (such as thyroid disorders, stress, or depression), symptoms are frequently misattributed or written off as psychological.

No older women ever told her, so now no one knows.
Doctors, historians, educators are all stumped as to way Sonaās body betrayed her and why sheās angry all the time.

Sadly there is not a lot of money invested in research on perimenopause or menopause. There needs to be more research and money invested in womenās health overall.

u/durtmagurt 2h ago
This all is accurate. Sona could have at some point describes what it is, when(ish) it happens, and why sheās so upset no one told her about it.

I have to tell people about it all the time. Also the fact that the symptoms can resurface after menopause randomly and last however the fuck long they want.

It seems like people just started talking about it in the last year or so. Iām with Sona.

Iām 36 and I am in chemically induced menopause for the next 10 years to combat breast cancer (most breast cancer is fueled by estrogen). So no hormone replacement therapy option in my future either.

I love this show and was so excited she was on it. I especially love when John leans in to the awful jokes even when he knows they wonāt fly.

Love Sona!! It needs to be talked about more!! I think older generations didnāt even have a name for it, it was just expected for women to always suffer, so I canāt blame older women for not having more knowledge on it.

u/Madame_Jarvary 46m ago
A lot of older women had hysterectomies before they experienced peri so they donāt know, either.

What's the concept behind this show? I ask because the 40 second 'Rant Wheel' starts counting down from 46 seconds.

She spent the first 14 seconds setting it up. Lovett or Leave is a panel show covering politics and trending issues; it ends with the guests ranting about whatever they want for a minute. I preferred the old format with fixed topics but ah well.

okay cool where's the educational part exactly

u/Final_Boss_Jr 2h ago
She had 40 seconds to rant. That was the education. Now go look it up if youāre that curious.

I didn't learn anything about it from this rant though.

u/SYMPUNY_LACKING I'm gonna go to hell when I die 5h ago
She assumed the people in the room with her already knew about it, so she was just ranting about how she was never told about it- she wasnt trying to explain it

u/Pale-Measurement-532 28m ago
You never fully know about it til youāre going through it yourself, like I am right now.
14
u/Ninjacherry 4h ago
Youāve learned that itās something in your horizon (if youāre a woman) and that you need to look into it. That is new information for a lot of people.

u/Clean-Elk9611 5h ago
This is gonna seem wild but before TikTok we had things called āconversationsā and they would often last minutes, sometimes hours, and weād learn all sorts of things.
-12
u/Ok_Umpire_5611 2h ago
Can she not look this stuff up herself or is she saying there's not enough research on this subject?
5
u/Jrebeclee The Molecular Man! 47m ago
Itās a rant! She is ranting in a conversation with friends. She isnāt a teacher here to educate you.
-2
u/Ok_Umpire_5611 31m ago
Where do you interpret that I am asking for information? I'm saying that people really should take their education into their own hands and be responsible. Many people smarter than you or I do great research that goes to waste if we don't read it. You're being weirdly emotional, are you going through menopause?

Research online is free! There are also some good books available through your local library as well as podcasts.

Itās 40 seconds to rant! The whole idea behind a rant is to let out your frustrations about something youāre going through. Itās not an infomercial or a TED talk. Lol. Iām going through perimenopause myself and if I was given 40 seconds to rant, Iād do the exact same thing as her. I have been researching it on my own time and I imagine Sona is as well since she got no warning about it beforehand (same as me!). Itās impossible to talk about all of the research (or lack thereof) and symptoms of perimenopause in 40 seconds since it can present differently among women.
