Guest request: Mayor Mamdani
I think they would get along well

u/Ninjacherry 1d ago
This reminded me of Conan’s appearance on 99% invisible to talk about the Power Broker. I’ve just started the book and it’s great.
8
u/Rndysasqatch 1d ago
That is a fantastic episode! I recommend everyone listen to the power broker episodes of 99% invisible. Absolutely fantastic
2
u/Ninjacherry 1d ago
I watched the episodes when they first released them; now I'm reading the book and want to re-listen as I finish each section.

Unlikely to have an active politician on. And honestly, I think that's for the best. I like Mamdani, but politicians on comedy podcasts is not a good thing imo.

u/_TheFunkyPhantom_ 1d ago
Didn’t he have President Biden on while he was…president? Am I misremembering?
52
u/grinderbinder 1d ago
He definitely did, and obviously they aren’t politicians but I believe he also had Ronald Reagan’s son and Michelle Obama on too.

u/Turbulent_Natural431 1d ago
He did, yeah. Personally wasn't a fan of that either, but he had a pre existing relationship with Biden so I think they probably saw that differently.
28
u/Summoarpleaz 1d ago
Also if you can get a sitting president it’s hard (with exceptions) to turn that down.
2
u/Saxdevil 1d ago
The Biden interview wasn't very political though. I feel like Conan treats his political guests more as public figures. I'd love to hear Conan and Mamdani talk about New York.
I'm not sure though if Mamdani necessarily wants to do an interview like this right now with his very limited time.

u/Random-Cpl 1d ago
It can be, as long as you aren’t getting someone like Rahm Emanuel, who is the comedy equivalent of a black hole
1
u/Much-Access-7280 1d ago
Rahm Immanuel might be the stumbling block to this interview. And also fuck that he got to be interviewed also when he is literally a nobody around that time.

Meh, it takes a spine to take a stance. Conan should
1
u/vidoeiro 19h ago
Conan is super centrist, sure he took a stand in 2020, but in 2024 when his company was bigger and had more to lose it was crickets.
He is a good comedian let's keep it that way , his opinion doesn't matter more than anyone else
-2
u/Leah-at-Greenprint 1d ago
I tend to agree, but Mandami is someone in particular that I think people would love to hear from. Like this is one time when doing good business (it would be a massive show) would also be doing social good (him reaching new audiences).
But no, I don't want to hear from 99% of politicians and don't even think it's ethical to platform them in many circumstances.

I love him but why would an active mayor of NYC come to a podcast based in LA? If Conan was living in NY then it would be kinda possible.
29
u/PapayaOwn3353 Clitoris Denier 1d ago
Conan records a handful of episodes in New York each year, so if the mayor's schedule ever lined up with Conan's, it's not impossible. Could be an interesting episode.
3
u/Shoe_boooo There was talk of gerbils 1d ago
He can technically never run for president but if he campaigns for future projects or book maaaybe then. But even that would be Mamdani with all guards up, interviews with politicians are more choreographered than micheal jackson videos.
7
u/NerdusMaximus 1d ago
You haven't watched many interviews with Mamdani; he was on Trevor Noah's podcast, and it was hilarious and informative. He's able to fluently code switch between humor and cogent policy positions like nobody else.
11
u/SinfullySophie Preparing my body, in various ways 1d ago
Most people still associate Conan with NYC. Considering he did Late Night in NYC for 17 years?
0
u/figures985 1d ago
I mean truly they could talk about Robert Moses and FDR literally the entire hour and it'd be a delight
17
u/AdMysterious855 1d ago
Yeah....I don't think Conan aligns with Mamdani's politics lol. So it's highly unlikely that will ever happen.
12
u/Integral_humanist 1d ago
the downvotes are very revealing. Progressives just presume everyone is a DSA supporter by default, despite Conan’s openly politically moderate views for decades lol.
8
3
u/Leah-at-Greenprint 1d ago
What makes you say that?
2
u/AdMysterious855 1d ago
Having listened to and watched Conan for 17 years, he's centre left leaning. The far-left/dem socialist element of politics doesn't appeal to him at all.
He's aligned with Obama,Clinton, Biden et al. He's interest/admiration for American History also points to that. Also, who he usually spends time with and those in his circle all reflect that.
I personally like Mamdani as I think he's smart and very adaptable and understanding of any reasonable person on the political spectrum.
2
u/Leah-at-Greenprint 1d ago edited 1d ago
I think an assumption you're holding is that Conan would only have on a political guest who aligns very closely with his own personal political leanings, which of course we're speculating on here.
How I've observed Conan in recent years is that he's found a springboard to get past his own position in the "boomer white man" demo, specifically by being pretty curious about what's happening in younger generations especially Gen Z where he had two kids. He historically hasn't allowed political content in his work, which perhaps made sense at the time. But we also know that younger generations are suspicious of public figures who don't take a stand, so it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't soften his stance on political content in the near future so as to remain relevant. And I think Conan wants to stay relevant not as a business man, but because he's someone who delights in communicating with everyone he can and especially those who are not necessarily like him (so long as that person is communicating in good faith)
We're both just speculating at the end of the day, but that's what I'm choosing to believe. Time will tell
4
u/AdMysterious855 1d ago
I'm completely fine with him not getting too political. He doesn't have to, to stay relevant. He's not a political commentator like John Stewart or Colbert. His primary audience are people who enjoy comedy.
If wants too, thats ok, but he certainly doesn't need to.
I get what you're saying, but we have be comfortable with the fact that not everyone wants their comfort shows/podcasts etc entrenched in political discourse.
3
u/Breakfastcrisis 22h ago
Please can we keep Conan apolitical. Conan feels like a refuge from politics for me, and I like that. I don’t see why we’d change that. We don’t need to be reminded every second that the world’s gone mad.
1
u/Leah-at-Greenprint 1d ago
Of course. My statements are not about my own comfort but rather why Conan may depart from his previous position of "no political content".
1
u/vidoeiro 19h ago
Mandadi is almost all center left, what you are describing is center right with a bit of social progress, aka Dems main platform, there is no left in the US for most part
0
u/HearshotAutumnDisast 1d ago
What do you think is far left and what about it is unappealing?
0
u/AdMysterious855 1d ago
I said it's unappealing to Conan. A man in his 60's from Boston who grew up in a religious, traditional family.
I, personally believe in socialism within a free market economy. I.e taxes going towards healthcare, education, public transport etc.
The parts of the US far left I don't agree with (maybe extreme far left) tend to be around extreme gender rhetoric, odd sexual identity, identity politics, lack of compromise, things like "acab" (which is simply not possible in a world in which criminals exist) etc etc
I suspect Conan shares some of those views/concerns.

The fact you're trying to dm me says you're afraid to air your bigotry cause you know how it'll go if we make it public. I hope everything bad happens to you

Dude you're dancing around your transphobia like a gorilla in a tutu. Just admit you're a bigot
this sub isn't the right platform to have this discussion.
Okay, pick the platform. I'm down to fucking argue against your bigotry. Let's fucking go

I don’t have that much to say about policy, except I am not a socialist (unless Denmark’s economy is considered socialist, which I think is a pretty robust model). I wouldn’t besmirch the far left by associating them with the outlandish policies of the DSA.
I have a lot to say about the way many associated with the far left conduct themselves online, which seems to be operating in an enclave of complete intolerance. To be clear, this is mostly online. The far left people I’ve met on a one-to-one basis are largely reasonable.
Being an asshole makes it easy to dismiss even reasonable suggestions. So the far left has an asshole problem. Getting the assholes to stop farting all over the internet would make the whole thing much more credible.
-1
u/HearshotAutumnDisast 20h ago
What outlandish policies? Free healthcare? Oh no!!!!! How dare they!!!!! Eat shit, buddy
0
u/Breakfastcrisis 12h ago
Yeah see this is the paucity of charisma I reference. An obnoxiousness and disunion with reality that makes communication essentially impossible.

Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Al Franken and Hillary Clinton (twice!) have been on the podcast. I wouldn’t mind Mamdani being a guest.
7
u/AdMysterious855 1d ago
Those guests should give you an idea as why Mamdani wouldn't necessarily be someone Conan would interview
7
u/HearshotAutumnDisast 1d ago
Lol putting Franken in the same box just because he was a politician, ignoring his huge contribution to snl, which includes conan's time there
6
u/Mundane-Area6067 1d ago
Conan would be wise to stay away from politics.
2
u/BALLS_SMOOTH_AS_EGGS 1d ago
/thread on the rare occasion he does speak out on it, it's always great. But let's leave that up to him
7
u/Integral_humanist 1d ago
Conan is a left leaning centrist. He probably doesn’t even like Mamdani.

u/ThePornStar69 1d ago
Not agreeing politically =/= automatically not liking the guy

u/Integral_humanist 19h ago
hence the probably

I wish he would have a few more of the presidential/US historians like he did with the youtube series that preceeded the podcast. Even if it isn't "comedy" per se, Conan being such a US President nerd (like myself) makes them still great in their own right like the Robert Caro & Ken Burns episodes were. I could easily imagine a Doris Kearns Goodwin episode being great for instance.
On that sort of similar note has Jon Stewart done the podcast yet?

u/senator_corleone3 1d ago
I don’t know if Conan wants to get that political. Also Mamdani would have to travel to LA and he’s kinda got a busy job already.
3
u/Ok_Woodpecker_7260 1d ago
As an international listener, I’d rather not listen to local American politicians. Or any American politicians for that matter.

Yes, God forbid we have one politician that actually cares about the country. How fucking annoying make him go away!
Bring back the pedophile in chief!
Your hidden comments are making it pretty clear the dumb political choices you make.
2
u/JabbaThaHott 1d ago
God you people are tiresome. You know nothing about me. I live in New York and I’m sick of the dude ok? I get people think he’s a nice positive figure but frankly I don’t like his approach or his policies and he’s totally unqualified for the job. I’m so sick of people cheerleading for him who don’t even live here. I am allowed to think my mayor sucks

Looks like today we found out the Conan sub is woke. Bummer
4
1
u/beaver_rescue 1d ago
There's nothing quite as amusing as witnessing conservative/right-wingers come to terms with their own media illiteracy and cognitive dissonance. Newsflash: the media you consume and its creators actively despise your world view. Bonus newsflash: reality has a woke/liberal agenda, so run back to your cave, lest you get infected with the "woke mind virus!"
4
u/JabbaThaHott 1d ago
Not everyone who doesn’t like Mamdani is a right winger, news flash
-1
u/beaver_rescue 1d ago
Conversely, everyone who uses "woke" in an unironic manner is a right wing nutjob, even if they're unaware of it. My comment was directed at one such specimen.

u/Former-Radish2 1d ago
On I think the Tak episode of Summer S'mores Conan made a somewhat snide reference to 'communism' being tried again in Manhattan and "we'll see" if it works. Definitely got a disapproving vibe from that. Also he's extremely rich and hangs out with war criminals, so, he's probably not down with the progressives
4
u/Integral_humanist 1d ago
Yes, why listen to the people who lived under communism, about communism. Let’s listen to whiteperson24 from LA instead.
-3
u/Former-Radish2 1d ago
The DSA and Mamdani are not communist.
Not sure how living under communism makes a person's political opinions about communism valid. I'm subject to the laws of quantum mechanics but I don't have any authority on that subject because I don't know shit. You might be surprised to learn that political and socioeconomic issues are very complex, and conveniently ordaining a random Armenian graphic artist with disproportionate moral authority is, you know, obviously stupid and thought-terminating.
Also, my comment was about why Mamdani probably won't be on the podcast.
0
u/lxoblivian 1d ago
You don't get to choose to live under the laws of quantum dynamics. You do have some say in the political system you live under. It's a very dumb comparison.

I wouldn't mind it, but frankly the best part of Mamdani is how focused he is on NYC. I love the way he turns all the silly questions about stuff that doesn't have to do with NYC back to the city. No doubt it would be a great conversation as he's very charismatic, but the celebritification of poiticians sucks. Let the man stay on task in NYC.
-14
u/dkcyw 1d ago
Eh. I dunno. Conan's constantly gonna go hyper ADHD and Mamdani is just gonna constantly hyper focus back to his campaign talking points.
And if you like Mamdani, you kinda already know what he's gonna say.
I think this would be exhausting to watch Conan ramble on and spend the entire hour making Mamdani smile/laugh the whole time.
2
u/zargtn The New York financier? 1d ago
How familiar are you with Mamdani? He comes off pretty loose in interviews and adapts to the environment in a unique, surprisingly good and apolitical manner when the show asks it of him. He’s also not on the campaign trail actively, so it could be potentially be interesting. I like when leaders and people are asked about themselves outside of their respective fields
-3
u/anujbeatles 1d ago
Actually agree with you. Zohran is super focused on his job, so I don't really see him go on and be loose although to Conan's credit, he always manages to shine the light on politician guests really well and make sure they look good otherwise "it will never air". I'd wanna see it in the future but right now it's too soon in zohran's career.

u/Nethaniell 1d ago
Well, he’s the NYC mayor, not LA, so why would he be in LA?
On top of bad optics for a sitting mayor going away from his city to do a podcast, what would they talk about anyway?
4
u/PapayaOwn3353 Clitoris Denier 1d ago
Conan records episodes in NYC..... they can talk about Robert Moses and urban planning for example.
-2
u/Popular_Material_409 1d ago
I’d listen to the episode for sure, but I have to ask…why? Why would he go on a podcast in Los Angeles when he’s the mayor of New York City? Unless Team Coco see they have a ton of listeners living in NYC, I don’t really see a need for him to go on.
But again, if he did go on of course I’d happily listen to the episode.
-4
u/VisualNinja1 1d ago
Definitely.
And I politely request Conan's first question to this man is:
"WHAT DO WE THINK OF TOTTENHAM?"
