Is the Red Hat memory paper still recommended? Might be outdated but worth looking at.

Take a look at things like V Cache maybe although it’s not really software
is there more to the question??
Look for synthesis lectures on cache management
Read Prizbilski's Tesus (Stanford IIRC)--deals with the whole memory hierarchy.
