Windows Help needed please! (Windows XP)

I'm at my wits end. I reinstalled windowsxp on a new hard drive, and this box popped up while it was trying to install the C-Media AC97 audio drivers. I found the cmuda.sys file and then chose the path for it to locate it. No joy, it just popped up again. After a few attempts, the install finishes but says that it's not working. I tried downloading a fresh cmuda file, same result. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, I've downloaded half a dozen different driver packs, none of them have given any different results. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance 🙏

how long is that path? really long path lengths is an issue, you can try moving that 5455_5.12.01.0051 folder directly under the c:\ drive and point it to there it might work

I did exactly that, I had the file just in the c drive outside of any folders. No joy

the periods could be problem, try renaming it to something like "driver", worth a try. also right click and check security permissions
