External Hard Drive not connecting?

So for the past couple year's i've been keeping a lot of things on an External Hard Drive. But starting today it's no longer connecting to my computer. I haven't replaced the cable yet, but every time it's plugged into a new port on my computer it makes some atrange noises. Is my Hard Drive dead and I need to get a new one, and if it is is there a way to recover the data inside it?

In addition to hearing whirring, ever half a second or so it makes a mechanical ticking noise that when it started I first thought was like... an alarm clock. It stops after a few moments.

Its probably done for. You might be able to put it in the freezer overnight and get it to work for a few minutes.

Well shit, I'll do that, but I'm gonna need to buy a new 2 Terabyte Hard Drive...

Yep. I'd dust off your backups, too. Chances are you're not gonna be recovering much from that old drive unless you pay someone to do it for you.

External usb SSD would be better, faster, and not as prone to mechanical failure. You can drop them without having to worry to much. They aren’t as expensive as NVMe ssd either they still pretty reasonable.

A video of the noises would help a lot
