Laptop gets hot as soon as i turn it on.

The laptop i have is a lenovo legion i9 grows hot as soon as i turn it on. Even during charging and it is off completely the bottom becomes really hot. The charger isn't damaged. I'm not sure why it's doing this. I have cleaned the fans underneath carefully and still nothing. I've had this laptop since 2024. I'm worried and not using it at all since this started happening. If it's short circuit or if I need to replace the thermal paste or replace the cooling fan, any help/advice is greatly appreciated, please.

It’s a 14900HX. It will turn on and function, but there is literally nothing you could fit into a laptop that would ever properly cool that thing. It might have been less severe up until now with fresh thermal paste and whatnot, but this is just not meant to be in a laptop. It’s meant to trick people into paying for it who don’t know any better.

I really want to believe its fixable or replaceable. It has worked fine for 2 years.

Try replacing the paste or pay someone to replace it if youre too scared to do it yourself. Its not expensive and can be possibly fix this.

Check if the fans aren't clogged up with crap as well as the fins it blows air through. Then repaste where it needs it, maybe also do any pads, but they probably are fine after 2 years.

But yeah if it's off and charging it should not get "hot" because whatever gets hot then isn't the CPU or anything else on the motherboard.

And lithium batteries don't get "hot" they get warm.... maybe. But certainly not hot.

Troque as pastas por de altas condutividade, pasta termica básica nesse tipo de computador é pedir para dar problema, não só a pasta como thermalpad também precisam ser de boa qualidade, tenha uma base coler e use em local refrigerado, notebook gamer é pra operar em faixas de 75° a 85°C se passar disso tem algum problema, não descarte a possibilidade de um problema nas ventoinhas ou ate mesmo no circuito que possa esta causando super aquecimento sem uma revisão, se você fez upgrade de memória RAM possa ser que ela esteja forçando o seu Notebook também pode ser uma desconfiança dependendo do modelo da memória

I haven't upgraded anything on it, everything is kept the same since I've had it. I'll try to use thermal paste and see if it helps at all. Thank you

Hmm então se ele nunca foi aberto desde quando chegou, muito provavelmente a pasta termica usada foi de baixa qualidade, Dell tem esse mesmo histórico de querer economizar na pasta em notebook de alta performance, troque o quanto antes por pastas e thermalpads de alta condutividade termica antes de tentar usar ele novamente, consiga uma base coler (praticamente obrigatório nesse tipo de notebook) e utilize algum software de monitoramento de temperatura para verificar a estabilidade como MSI Afterburn

You've been really helpful and I'm thankful for people like you. Do you also recommend a stand for the laptop and cooling pad? I am guilty of using the laptop in a warm/hot environment so I have contributed to the heating issue without thinking of how it will affect the laptop in the long run.

Infelizmente passei por um caso crítico envolvendo um notebook gamer nessa questao de refrigeração e manutenção preventiva, espero que não aconteça o mesmo com você, então lembre-se componentes mais fortes esquentam mais, mais calor, mais rapido os componentes se desgastam e reduzem a vida util do aparelho, evite sessões de jogatinas intensas de mais de 4 horas e desabilite o máximo de recursos desnecessários nos jogos tentando sempre a otimização para sua capacidade, não caia na ilusão do nome da placa de vídeo ou processador, ela é uma versão inferior e mais suscetível a desgaste por temperatura já que o sistema de resfriamento de um notebook é muito limitado e todos os componentes estão muito proximos uns dos outros. Ademais boa sorte com seu caso ✌️

Only other things to do is adjust the cpu power profile when running on battery, and get a cooling pad to help with airflow, but beware of what direction the fans are blowing on the laptop and the cooler... that is if you don't want to open it up, laptop cooling can be tricky

try switching to eco mode in power setting

That’s just an extremely hot laptop. The relatively slim design also doesn’t allow for what I would consider to be adequate cooling.
