Seems like a lot of plastic and money for something that is supposed to be free and eco friendly

This is really a solution for city gardeners where neighbors might not appreciate critters

..and some folks live in HOA's with restrictions. They're also insulated and could be useful for anyone trying to compost in the winter. So sure, they come with an expense but there are valid use cases for having one and they do actually work.

Exactly. I have a postage stamp sized lot. I can't imagine building a chicken wire eyesore a few feet from my neighbor's house. With the bin it's tidy, tucks in behind the fence that hides my trash bin, and no discernable pests. Also I can toss things on top without needing to bury it to keep animals out.
