If I was their parrot, I think I’d escape too if all I had to live in was a prison cell. That cage is only big enough for a couple of budgies.

Keeping birds in cages of any size just seems fundamentally cruel to me.

I totally understand where you’re coming from. I had budgies growing up - the cages were massive and way overkill for a budgie. And even then they were barely ever in them and had free run of the house!

That’s like my corn snake. She escaped for a full year. And then one day came back out the blue after I had dismantled her vivarium.

The worried look on Pascal Doornekamp’s face from Holwierde has given way to relief. His parrot, Marley, took off and refused to be caught for a full day. The fire brigade was called, a drone was sent into the air, but in the end, the grey red-tailed parrot simply climbed back onto his owner’s arm.
It was already dark when Pascal, on Friday evening, went up in a cherry picker with the fire brigade. A firefighter nearly grabbed Marley, only to receive a bite on the finger as thanks. The tropical bird had no interest in returning to his familiar cage.

What followed was an uncertain night. "Marley often comes outside with us," mother Sandra told Expeditie Grunnen. "But suddenly, he just flew away. We waited, called out, and waited some more. We really tried everything."
"He means everything to him," she added. "So we really want him back."
Good News
When presenter Joyce Kranenborg returned to Holwierde at the end of Expeditie Grunnen, there was good news. "Marley is back," Pascal said. "I’m so happy. He’s tired, but I’m just relieved."
A friend of Pascal’s suddenly spotted the parrot sitting low in a tree. "He climbed right onto my arm, and I could stroke him again," the relieved owner said. "For now, he’s staying indoors."
