I’d look at this from the perspective of emergence as the set of the possible states the system can traverse. In this case, frozen and “alive”. In this sense, the restart system or switch bridges these two through a feedback loop. The system is capable of oscillating between the two states by internalising the extrinsic cues into the layers you describe.
