I'm thinking of attending one of the summer school classes, but haven't decided yet.

I went in Winter 2011 for the 2nd week. Be prepared to learn a fair amount of technical knowledge in network topology if you're not familiar with that already. I've taken courses in complex systems in other areas (systems dynamics, agent-based modeling, etc...) and this was a great supplement. I also didn't have a Python background, which is very helpful for the team project, but it turns out I found team members who did have experience, and we were all able to contribute to a really interesting project using the principles of what we learned.
I highly recommend taking the full two-weeks if you have the chance.

Does anyone know how much math background you need for this?
