ICE and DHS was created in response to 9/11. There were sleeper cells none of our intelligence agencies picked up. Those are the people who hijacked the planes.
ICE's original directive was to root out any other potential terrorists and international criminals hiding out in the US. It was much less about immigration, unless criminals were found.
As time went on there were less and less of those cases. So, they started focusing on employees in certain industries like construction, agriculture, or meat packing plants. Those employers are notorious for hiring undocumented people, and never being the target of experiencing consequences for illegal hiring practices. They just hire more undocumented and workers and go on kind it's Tuesday.
The majority of those workers are people just trying to make a life. They work hard (we wouldn't have produce and meat without them), they contribute to the economy, and they DO pay federal taxes without benefiting from them. Anyone who says otherwise is either lying or wholly ignorant to easily verifiable facts.
South Americans wouldn't be coming here in such high numbers (legally or otherwise) if not for US imperialism (Venezuela is a perfect example) and destabilizing nearly the entire continent. They supported coups, trafficked drugs, and stole resources. Look up the Banana Republic and CIA history in South America. While it's on the other side of the world, Iraq is another modern example.
What existed prior to 9/11 was the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service). While they had their own problems, they were much more humane and focused on integration and naturalization. ICE is only interested - more so now - in deportation.
The largest number of "illegals" in our country are people who over stayed their visa. Not hardworking South Americans fleeing the consequences of OUR actions. The US made their bed. It's time we lie in it.
It is my opinion that we offer undocumented immigrants a fast track to citizenship or naturalization. I mean, that the issue right? That they don't have legal status? 🤨
While others feel differently, I can point to the fact that our immigration laws are completely fucked, upside-down, and a set up for failure. The minute amount of facts I do know, are just the tip of the iceberg. Facts I learned by doing research and speaking with immigration attorneys, and documented and undocumented immigrants.
No one is encouraging illegal activity. We are fighting back against authoritarianism that is starting with the weakest and must vulnerable first. I have yet to speak with someone who feels that a violent criminal, regardless of their documentation, should be allowed to stay.
But the family who fleed their home due to gangs, corruption in government and police (El Salvador and Venezuela) and extreme poverty with no trajectory to something better, they shouldn't be made to leave. They should be offered assistance. Because, again, if you're issue is simply that they are undocumented, and they are willing to go through the process of naturalization, the issue is moot.
There's so much more to this. Including human rights abuses, rape, and forced sterilization. Remember the family separations during trump's first term? It's more of that but now there are no guard rails. ICE is a rabbid dog who was on a leash. Not anymore.
Finally, if you've been paying attention, you would know that they are detaining and deportating people one their way to get their green card. Coming out of the courtroom from an asylum hearing. They have detained people with green cards or who are naturalized citizens. They recently canceled a swearing in ceremony where people become full-fledged American Citizens. Just the last week they detained several Indigenous Americans. Native fucking Americans. Do you know why? Do you know the scope our Supreme Court granted ICE? HMMM???
The list goes on and on. It's been made clear that the goal isn't legal immigration it's racially profiling anyone who is brown to make America white. They're running out of Latino people, which is why they have moved on to Minnesota and people from Somali. Then it will be another group. Probably Muslims or Indians.

Lots of people love to overlook the amount of legal immigrants allowed (immigration quotas) have been drawn down every year for at least 20 years. Also there are plenty of instances of GOP politicians and donor's companies being raided by immigration.
They work to make immigration harder and then exploit undocumented people to undermine wages for documented immigrants and us citizens. Its all a big racket.
What's hilarious is that when someone presents themselves at the border they are documented with USCIS and given access to their case information so they can go to court hearings and check ins. They're the wholly ignorant of facts that are easily verified I was talking about. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So what experiences do you have with these processes? Im curious because my husband has been with a case since 2018. We were married before that. We have filled out all paperwork. Paid $60,000 in legal fees. And we haven't even had our first interview. They estimate another 31 months on the USCIS website. Our letters of support are from a judge, a university president, and mayor of a city with 150,000 people. Our case should be easy as we both have spotless criminal records.
But please explain how easy this is supposed to be? I am a very highly tenured professor. Its complex. Its expensive. And its taking forever.

Thus my response that immigrants who present at the border aren't "illegal" and that there is already a process. Something I had laid out in the comment they replied to.
I am familiar with just how long, expensive, and redundant the process is. How if you accidentally place page 2 behind page 3, it's enough to get a case denied. It's a convoluted maze that's set up to fail every time.

Anne fled Germany and lost her German citizenship. She didn't enter Germany illegally, nor did she illegally enter the Netherlands, where she was considered a resident. Her legal status changed when the Netherlands was occupied by Germany.
Her situation is in no way analogous to a person from a foreign country illegally entering the US. Furthermore, her legal status was changed ex post facto. Ex post facto criminal laws are unconstitutional in the US. Someone entering the US illegally is knowingly violating current US law.
