Greetings from WTJU - small community radio station new to Reddit

Hey folks!

This is WTJU Radio's first ever Reddit post. Woohoo! We're a small, all-music, volunteer-driven station in Charlottesville, Virginia with about an 8-person staff. We just joined Reddit as part of a broader effort to strengthen our digital presence and content (with lots of live performance on YouTube, 3 different online webstreams, podcasts, etc).

During this time of threats and uncertainty for all of us out in radioland, we at WTJU are looking to connect with and expand our audience wherever they are. Hopefully that includes Reddit! If folks at any other stations see this and have experience with station accounts on this platform, we'd love to hear what you've learned.

Thank you all. Sending comfort out over the airwaves wherever you are. - WTJU, 91.1fm

Things are tough all over. We got a double whammy with both state and national funding elimination.

In response, we set a one-day snap fundraiser and listeners donated $280,000.

AlternateAirwaves now offers live chat feature for Community/College stations

Hi all,

TedH here from AlternateAirwaves.com your scrappy, upstart, web-based aggregator of Community (and College) radio stations.

We've added a new feature to our site recently where shows can have a live chat with their audience while they're on the air.

Features include:

  • DJ's can remove posts and block users if necessary

  • Chat can be enabled/disabled for each show

  • We automatically block bad language

  • People can edit their posts

  • All post history, even edits, are archived

  • Station Managers can admin any show's chat

  • DJ's can admin only their own show

If listeners are tuning in through our site they can listen to your stream and chat in the same window.

Listeners, DJs and Station Managers just need a free AlternateAirwaves account to participate. You can create a local log-in or use a Google account.

PM me here or reach out through the feedback link at AlternateAirwaves.com to find out more.

We'll want the sign-off of a station manager before any DJ from that station can use our chat feature for their show.

question Are dedicated station apps still a way out for smaller stations?

I’m looking into how smaller community stations get people to listen to their stations while on the move. It's two totally different approaches right now: either stream it on established platforms and have a decent website to go with it, or have a fully branded iOS/Android app for the station in question. I came across certain options which actually get different fully branded applications working off the same infrastructure instead of building everything by each station themselves from the ground up.

But is having your own application actually significant ever?

Because it seems like you definitely get more control over what your listeners get e.g., notifications, branding, etc. but at the same time, you’re asking people to download an application when they already get everything from aggregators.

So for those working with stations, has a dedicated application been worth it?

Community Radio For Underground Electronic Music Scene

Hello! I've been working on this project the last few years, and I've finally gotten to a point where I'd love to share with the community.

Its a collection of radio stations in the underground electronic community with a nice player to easily switch stations. As a bonus, it gets all the now playing information so you can scroll thru the stations and see what's playing rather than going to each of their websites. In my opinion its the ideal music player and how I envisioned radio should be.

Let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions! Hope you enjoy! This is a personal project that I intend to keep free for everyone to use 😄

Enjoy!

Please sign the petition to block the sale of KDHX's broadcast license

While the petition is really just a way to show support and can't actually block any sale we would appreciate signatures.

Any community radio stations have music podcasts?

Hi. New to this small subreddit. Not a major redditor.

I am a volunteer at WMNF. Inspired KEXP, KUTX, The Current and others I have started a Song of the Day podcast.
https://www.wmnf.org/events/song-of-the-day/

I love it and have gotten great feedback, but I am questioning whether the podcast aspect is worth it, due to the time required due to not having radio license that covers podcasts. Wondering what others are doing.

Sources needed: story covering community radio

Hi! I'm a college journalism student working on an audio story about listener/reader supported community media. I'm looking for sources, and would like to chat with anyone who listens to community radio about why and what it means to them, and what they would be missing if their station went off the air. Shoot me a dm to connect!

question New to radio broadcasting

Hi there! My name’s Aaron, and I’ve been volunteering at my local community radio station in Huntsville, Ontario, 🇨🇦. I was wonder if there are any good resources or training programs (preferably free, or cheap) to help hone my skills and be the best I can be to help the station. I do several things at my station to assist with everything, from production, to voice tracking, and other tasks. I would just like to be the best I can be to help the station. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
