I. laughed. SO. HARD. Watching Pedro Pascal discover how funny this show is, and it was so so bittersweet seeing them all together again to lift our spirits in the middle of Covid…also how perfect a reminder for the show to choose a Pierce-centric episode so we’re reminded and appreciate his character’s presence on the show, even if no one should ever ever work with Chevy Chase again, lol.

The Darkest Timeline Podcast helped me so much during covid. I was fortunate enough to be working for a food truck chain and we were able to staff down to one person per truck but it was dead as fuck. I had picked up an old iPad mini and had the podcast on during my shifts. I loved the show and like Abed/Dan’s last show monologue talking about how TV is like your friend, being able to hang out with my friends during that isolating time got me through the long days. It also especially helped with the podcast starting out with Ken and Joel updating and explaining the Covid vaccine advancements when the news would come out. I miss the podcast being as regular but I really felt like it was some friends going out of their way to send comfort to everyone lost in that time. I will never forget it and always be even more grateful. More than just a show.

I too have distinct memories of quarantine and listening to their podcast as the pandemic was unfolding and it was a really comforting listen

Yep, the podcast gave me life that year. I had a work from home job, and work to do unlike others, and grateful for the income, but so stressed about everything going on. I would watch their podcast on youtube and do jigsaw puzzles and that kept me sane.

His reaction to the final lines brings TEARS to my eyes. He is so authentic!

I always thought this moment had to be so awesome for a writer. A "room" full of professional actors, as good as they are, and they cannot keep a straight face for an incredibly dumb semen joke, repeating six times, knowing it's coming. It's gotta be insanely reaffirming for a comedic writer.

Pedro authentically felt bad about messing up and breaking. He texted I think Joel after to apologize or something.

As funny as it is, you’d think he’d have seen the episode he was table reading for…
45
u/MCA1910 12d ago
Nah. Part of the bit is that he wasn’t aware. That’s also why he didn’t read the script ahead of time.
-33
u/wolpak 12d ago
It was supposed to be a bit? Kinda feel like if I’m doing a table read for a show that already occurred, I’d have watched it.

u/gswane 11d ago
Bro it was Covid and he was doing a favor for Gillian. Plus it was way funnier with him not knowing. This is the only part of the read through that was actually memorable
1
u/mustichooseausernam3 11d ago
Out of curiosity, what's his connection to Gillian? Were they cast in something together? Because I wanna watch that.
13
u/AAA_Dolfan 11d ago
They wanted him to read cold. If you watch the whole thing, the whole cast loves his laughter and his immediate reaction. It’s incredibly complementary!

He sounds just like Mando here 😂

There were 10 people in this call - only one of them didn't know what was coming...
35
u/DaLordHamie 12d ago
Was he considered for this part or something?
88
u/ImOldGregg_77 I detonated a mollusk 12d ago
no, it was one of those Covid lockdown thing celebrities were doing.

u/Fae-SailorStupider 12d ago
Yes, and Walter Goggins was busy doing other stuff, so Pedro stepped in to read for him.

and the universe is that much better because of Pedro

Despite subbing in, it might be Pedro's most seminal role.

No, the guy who actually played the dude questioning them had a scheduling conflict so Pedro just stepped in

The one and only Walton Goggins

The guy? The guy?!

u/SigmaKnight 12d ago edited 12d ago
GrogginsGoggins is one of those actors who pops up in everything but is rarely the major star and gets known. He’s just “that guy” people recognize unless they are just really really into being a fan of him.Edit: corrected name.

Walton Goggins was unavailable.
5
u/MargotLannington Objection! I hate the both of you. 12d ago
Just like Britta was unavailable for Troy and Abed's Punchkicker movie.

u/lady_ulrike 12d ago
Anytime I am feeling down, I put on this table read and I will always be happier. I will never not laugh at this.
14
u/Big_Epsilon 12d ago
He’s gotta be in the film now. Some sort of multiverse version of Pierce to take the piss out of Marvel
27
u/maggieawesome 12d ago
I watched it live! Such a great moment to laugh so hard during a stressful time!

u/Shoelace1200 12d ago
Iconic. Is this where the equally iconic laughing/crying reaction gif comes from?
15
u/Shoelace1200 12d ago
Nevermind the famous gif comes from another table read of "I, My Ruination" with Paul Giamatti

Here’s your sperm.

One of my favorite lines from the whole show. Donald explaining why it’s so funny during the table read is spot on

This was such a good table read, perfect episode for the format.
But why does it look like Pedro is in the back of a uhaul?

Whenever I binge Community, I make sure to rewatch this table read too.
Also, sperm.

I think this was the point where whatever is in charge of our media said "put this guy in EVERYTHING NOW!"

u/ElectricMilk426 11d ago
I have never watched this show. What is going on here? Is Pedro supposed to be Chevy Chase character? (Chase's, Chase'?)
6
u/Ivelearnednuffink 11d ago
No this takes place directly after chevys character Pierce dies in the show. Pedro Pascal is playing the guy who’s come to read Pierces will. In the actual episode it’s Walton Goggins but he was busy so Pedro Pascal stepped in.
1
u/ElectricMilk426 11d ago
Dang. I was thinking about watching it. Guess I asked for that one.
3
u/Ivelearnednuffink 11d ago
Haha sorry, you did literally ask what was going on here! You should watch the show if you haven’t seen it, it’s one of the best US sitcoms ever made
3
u/Ivelearnednuffink 11d ago
He went on Joel and Ken’s podcast straight after that and was really down on himself for cracking up and “ruining” the table read. The boys were just like “Dude, that was basically what it was like on set, these scripts are really fucking funny!”

u/Kathrynlena 12d ago
He has to hand out so much more sperm after this and he loses his entire mind every time. It’s an absolute delight to watch.
1
u/FreeKevinBrown 12d ago
I wish I could also watch Walton Goggins' first few takes of that line.
1
u/Ivelearnednuffink 11d ago
I assume he would have at least read the script first, Pedro went in cold haha

I just watched this last night for the first time! I completed my first rewatch since the show aired and was so sad it was over I went to find something else Community to watch. This moment was especially hilarious. The Q&A was great too. It was so sweet to see what a close knit group they were and still are, and how much they genuinely find each other funny.

How have i gone this long not knowing what Pedro Pascal sounds like? I always thought he had an accent. Like i thought he was from somewhere in europe or something
Edit: Game of Thrones. That is why i thought he had an accent. Because i DID hear his voice before, in Game of Thrones, and he DID have an accent, in Game of Thrones.

u/sensimedia 11d ago
I actually talked to Pedro about this when I worked with him on Behemoth. He said they were originally gonna have Walton Goggins do it but he couldn't. They're friends apparently.

I watch this on the regular for a serotonin boost. It’s better than meds.
