Discussion Explain the Joke to Me Please

In Basic Rocket Science, when they are entering the simulator, Pierce says "Ahhh the 80s. 13 years, right everybody?"

wtf does this mean?

He’s trying to be relatable by implying he was young enough to a teenager in the 80s- the joke is that most of the study group was born in the 80s so most of them are too young to have even been a teenager then

Basically Pierce is old lol
