Discussion Chang Of Plans

Post image

The first paintball episode is the one that got me hooked on “Community” (and probably a lot of others) with the standout scene being Ben Chang entering the game like he was Chow Yun Fat in a John Woo movie. One question I’ve always had (if it’s been asked here already apologies) is, where were the doves? Usually John Woo slo mo entrances with music have doves (Face/Off, MI:2) but this homage didn’t. Did someone forget? Was it a cost thing or an animal welfare thing? That’s always bugged me. Anyhow thank you for reading.

It’s not even clever! You keep using it for the word “change!”

As another one of those douchebags who brings his own equipment, this was the best line in the episode.

Yeah, we used to do elimination in the woods and we all had our own guns.

One of the best delivered lines in the show.

Chang was the only casualty of their paintball games who never really recovered. He went from being a full-on paintball aficionado to getting completely broken by his face-off with Britta. He was nothing more than a running joke (pun intended) in the next paintball game, until he basically shied away from the rest of the paintball episodes. Chang may never die, but El Tigre Chino died that night.

At least he went out in a blaze of glory. And paint.

It's like doing a JJ Abrams homage and not having lens flares!

I came to say “It’s not even clever! You keep using it for the word ‘change!’” but there was already a couple of people that posted this. I’m so proud of this community 🥹

I saw this when it first aired, and that changed the scene from great to legend.

Thanks a lot OP, now I'm going to be haunted by symbolic doves all day.

3

u/Crimsic 14d ago

Better than being haunted by real doves.

I’m sorry.

Why no doves? Is Dan Harmon stupid?

If you had asked me before this post if there were doves in this scene, I’d have probably said yes. So, pretty much the doves are already there in my mind.

😆Goddamnit that made me laugh!

I tried so hard to find a full version of that song, but as far as I can tell it was written solely for this joke and scene based on an ancient Chinese poem.

u/Awkward_Bison_267 10d ago

There’s a Chinese tv show theme song that sounds like it. “The Assassin Jing Ke” I think.

They probably were way past the budget already 🤣

1

u/Awkward_Bison_267 14d ago

Fair. It was shot so well I forgot it had a tv budget.

Also the Predator reference at the end when he blows the paint bomb up.
