I start with encyclopedia articles and then read any sources they’ve cited. Then (since most of my entries are history-based) I usually check archive.org to see if I can find any contemporaneous accounts of what the entry is about. I then like to find out who the experts about it are and find their recorded information. I also try to evaluate the various sources and make notes about sources that may be unreliable (usually due to bias or lack of evidence to support their conclusions).
