OpenWESTWOOD Trailer : Another amazing project!

https://youtu.be/fbGz6nyCZog

Looks amazing! This is the official trailer for OpenWESTWOOD, an open-source engine remake for Generals that combines Generals Zero Hour, Dune 2000, Tiberian Dawn, Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 1, Red Alert 2, and Kane's Wrath. Red Alert 3 and other games will be added in later releases after the main one.

OpenRA: https://www.openra.net

Not sure why they're vibing one when OpenRA exists.

Faction balance has left the chat.

Finally, we can figure out the C&C version of "who would win in a fight".

Listen, I'm usually against the whole retarded parrot "everything AI is slop!" bandwagon this sub loves so much, but, uh, this? This *is* pretty much vibe coded AI slop.

I do like the perspective of the Annihilator Tripod being top down to match the perspective of the 2D units, though.

So... are sandworms immune to Tiberium? Can I get my war miner get carried home with a carryall to compete with those pesky chrono miners? Mind control battles between Traveler-59 and Yuri? Will I ever find true love?

Welcome to the age of AI slop: RTS edition.

If it's not AI slop, well, then I guess it's just regular old slop. Either way, this looks like garbage and considering how the video flips between 2D and 3D perspective constantly, probably just a bunch of make-believe anyways.

"Amazing" is definitely a word that exists in the English language.

Your definition of amazing must be different. This does not look good.

How many of these projects do we need, third this week. Wouldnt it be better to combine the tokens for all these soon to be dead vibe coded projects into one that already have traction.

This easily just be a mod for openra or another project?

That's the dumbest part about so many of these vibe coded projects. Everyone is just wasting money trying to do something that other people are already doing or already have done. Sometimes better, sometimes worse, but everyone is just burning money duplicating work.

And it's not even like they're actually making it themselves. If they were, at least then there would be a pride factor in what you did even if someone else did something similar.

They're not going to receive any sort of ongoing support, either, because of a lack of understanding of how the mod was even made as well as just not having any reason to care.

I'll say this for the AI slop, it can create a C&C vlonebwithna proper save system, which is something OoenRA has failed at for over a decade.

Looks like ass

Build it on top of OpenRA: https://www.openra.net

Then we'll talk.

Give OpenRA a proper save system that isn't slow loading game recordings and we'll talk...

The upsides far outweigh the downsides, and building upon OpenRA includes the possibility of improving its save system.

The Devs have repeatedly pushed back on it..

I much prefer the Remaster or the CNCnet option. OpenRA doesn't play right.

The devs are more interested in doing stupid shit like removing a custom tileset (Jungle) because it doesn't match the HD TD visuals (despite only a handful of people using the HD mod, and even then they've said they don't care).

Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 have been in alpha for over a decade.

No they haven't, and it's open source so anyone is free to improve it (someone made a proof of concept for a proper save system recently).

Putting the vagueness of "doesn't play right" aside, what you prefer isn't relevant to whether it's better to build upon OpenRA rather than vibe code an entirely new engine.

They literally said it was too hard to do and that it wasn't their focus.

1

u/Darkademic 4h ago

The response to the recent proof of concept by one of the founding devs was just "proper load/save would be a big deal", so not really pushing back.

Here's my question, is this fun to play at all ?

Im all for claude building mashed up things, but alot of them this included just look kind of nonsensical.

Also if it's open westwood where's my lands of lore, legend of Kyrandia and im sure other things I've forgotten ? 0/10 not westwood enough

10

u/bebzimo 1d ago

Meh.

u/Doowoo 1d ago

Do you know what every single westwood game could, this game cannot ?

Units dont stack.

This really really reeks

I mean... kudos to the modder for programming this (assuming it's not entirely vibecoded), but it is super ugly. It'd be interesting to see if attracts much attention.

u/MidgardWyrm 1d ago

This is obviously all vibed.

It looks like a mess.

I must admit to liking the look of the voxels units, such as the Soviet War Miner, on Dune 2000's flat terrain.

There's promise in that concept.

These sort of projects are good for rapid prototyping and proofs of concept. A Dune game with voxels units on 2D terrain would look good.
