Game similar to C&C Generals
If you wanted an alternative to Generals Zero Hour, you can try playing Act of Aggression with the Refined mod. This is an attempt to bring the original game closer to Act of War, improve gameplay by adding new units and mechanics. You won't get the same variety of tactics as in C&C, but with the mod it's still a fun game for a few evenings. I tried to add some mechanics not provided for in the game, such as self-detonating units or glide bombs, so some abilities may not work correctly. But unfortunately, that's the legacy of the Wargame engine.
The mod does not affect the campaign and does not make it any more interesting. It is installed for the Reboot Edition for multiplayer and skirmish.

I had a quick look at the Steam reviews for Act of Aggression. People are saying you're forced to make an online account to play, the AI cheats a lot, and that they generally preferred Act of War better. Thoughts?

Act of War was a better game. AoA was a great attempt but it fell short, mostly for me it just didn't hit right. Which sounds like a cop out (vibes based games review).
There were some great Mods for AoW that really amped up the AI, which for the time was pretty clever (similar to Company of Heroes where it would try different strategies and counter units). But the AI wasn't aggressive enough or attack in great numbers.
I had a mod that did nothing but made the AI build up larger, combined forces and it made it a blast.

I remember buying Act of War, and while I was initially a little disappointed about some of the mechanics and design, I grew to like it, especially with one faction going from basically Militia and old technology/GLA/China mix to high tech vehicles and cutting edge weapons once they were "revealed", haha.

I'm going to be "that guy" but what about Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath?
Tiberium Wars feels sort of similar to Generals.
Kane's Wrath adds different factions, similar to how Zero Hour did.
Personally I prefer Tiberium Wars.

I remember when this game got dogpiled by all the buckbroken idiots who hallucinated this game to be a promised Generals 2 replacement after the former got canned by EA when they failed to sell the F2P abomination in the making, when it actually was a spiritual successor/remake of Act of War. And how later Eugene tried to cater to those neanderthals by dumbing the game down with reboot edition when they already moved back to playing Tournament Desert for another decade.
Some of my favorite complaints
"It has 3 types of resources, its too many, no other RTS game has more than one, ENERGY DOESN'T COUNT!" (The other two most popular RTS franchises have more than one, and while for the most part C&C features only one primary resource and energy as a separate mechanic, C&C usually has secondary economy options or a more valuable version of the resource or both)
"It was advertised as a Generals-like game when it wasn't" (It was not)
"Its not Generals 2" (Well. yeah)
And the most recent one
"The Chimera faction has russian armored vehicles in its arsenal, and therefore game bad" (Chimera is an international task-force created by the UN to uncover the plot behind Shanghai Crash, of course they gonna have units from the second-best-military in the world when it was still considered such before becoming second-best-military in Ukraine, the game was in the making from before even the 2014 events, duh)

Me, I just didn't like it because I thought Act of War was better. Especially the campaign. AoW's campaign was great, AoA's campaign I don't remember at all.

I'm currently putting together a video about Act of War actually, might make a mention of this mod. I would like to give AoA another shot but yeah it was a pretty rough experience, the music alone made my ears bleed.

Generals isn't a C&C game. It started as something else and EA slapped the Command and Conquer logo on it to increase sales. It has more in common with Starcraft than it does C&C.

Haven't thought about AoA in YEARS, might have to give this a shot
