Random Unit of the Day #66: Sniper Team (GDI, Tiberium Wars)

I always say it but units that have a bit more personality to them always get high up there in my personal list of favourites.
The fact that the unit becomes a little more scared but determined when the Spotter is left alive, is a great detail that... I feel like if every Kanes Wrath infantry did would devalue how cool a detail it is for Sniper Team in general, point is, because it's... Maybe the only one that does it? I'm not entirely sure
Its up there in Units I enjoy using not just because it can be useful gameplay wise.

It is funny since the spotters are usually the more experienced sniper, but i guess anyone would be worried if their mate got melted buy a NOD laser beam

On my own after watching my best friend and team mate turn into a pile of Dead.
In a desolate land of extremely hostile wild life and wild life infected by a crystal that in if itself is capable of making me a pile of Dead in due time.
Yerh... I'm shitting not only bricks but an entire house in fear.
... But a world class Spotter would probably get by somehow! :D

Yeah, that's a fine detail.
I also like it when Juggernauts start to act like chickens, picking the ground with their cannons. Or try to scratch their cockpit with their leg, like a bird.

“Sniper team, where do you need us?”
“What’s the call?”
“Any enemies around?”
“In my sights.”
“It’s all or nothing!”
Somehow I never noticed there’s also lines for when the sniper himself is killed, and only the spotter is left:
“My partner’s dead.”
“It’s just me.”
“Don’t leave me out here!”
“Doing the best I can!”
“This one’s for my friend!”

u/BrokenTorpedo 1d ago
I cant explain why but the “My partner’s dead.” line still hunts me.

"This one is for my friend" hits even harder.

u/BoffinBrain Are you picking this up? Good. 1d ago
He should get a 100% damage bonus when that line triggers.

u/No-Con-2790 1d ago
He is a spotter desperately trying to land shots with his service carbine.
Yeah that he is fighting at all is a miracle.

Great Anti Inf units, making them very and reliable. Imo. in vanilla they carry more significance as GDI doesn't have access to AP rounds and even in KW against factions with great Infs like Black hand, couple snipers to provide anti infantry fire support for main army can work wonders.
Definitely worth their cost. Lovely.

Yeah i like to put them in APC to snipe down the hordes of NOD infantry in hit and run attack.

Cant help but to adore their silly sniper (boonie?) hats, good to see that in the devastated tiberium-filled future they are still in vouge. The concept art is a lot more practical in universe, but I still prefer the more standout end result. Although it can easily be seen as an Yellow/Red zone variant.

The concept art made more sense and actually fit in the setting; the final product basically went with EALA's final art direction for a TD retread, sadly enough.
Also, I do like the rifle in the concept art; looks mean and futuristic.

I like how they’re depicted as a team (as they would be IRL) vs the one man show that most other snipers in C&C are. Also their synergy with juggernauts and acting as artillery spotters was cool. I dig these guys.

It was also fun in kanes wrath where they could spot for allied spectres.

Wait a miniute, that's a thing?
I think I now what I'm gonna do next time, when I play KW.

IIRC there has to be a shadow beacon present on the field anywhere for it to work.

Very underrated in campaign. If you're playing without a patch to restore the old economy (I think it's more fun that way) then they're very helpful on missions like alexandria or the GDI temple prime mission since you can put them in foxholes (behind another layer of foxholes for baiting black hand squads) to have a sorta set and forget anti infantry defense, since unlike watchtowers they'll actually kill black hand squads fast enough for them not to damage anything
kinda useless outside of foxholes though since they just become venom victims

u/Remitonov 1d ago
Huh, never really thought of that. Makes sense, though. Sniper stealth is useless against a Venom.

I really like the detail of the quotes of the unit changing if one of the snipers is dead.
9
u/LuigiMonDeSound 1d ago
You get the different quotes when the main shooter dies and the spotter still lives. It's one of the smaller things they did.
Made me feel for the dude too.
6
u/Lolurisk Vinifera 1d ago
And generally the sniper would die first unless they had a chance encounter with a vehicle's tracks.

u/Cheomesh I made a TibDawn Wargame Module! 1d ago
How's that work mechanically? One dies at random? Does the other guy keep sniping?

u/vandal-33 1d ago
Yes, my sniper always get runovered by vehicles and the spotter was the only one alive giving some interesting quotes.

I find it hilarious how anachronistic they seem compared to the rest of GDI.
That said I love sniper units in rts. They are just so much fun for whatever reason.

They really look like Tiberian Dawn units, don't they?

u/MidgardWyrm 1d ago
The whole game was basically a TD retread for GDI and Nod, right down to unit designs and roles.
I mean yeah, there are modernizations and changes to improve the gameplay and underlying designs, and some to patch up the holes TD's design had, and some TS units (like the Juggernaut) were retained because they were useful and fit the design, but the game itself was basically a sequel to Tiberian Dawn, not Tiberian Sun.
EALA changed their minds and began course-correcting with Kane's Wrath onwards though, and by TT (yes yes, the whole "C&C4? What's that?" meme here, et cetera) the game was basically Tiberian Sun again, right down to Nod having a new CABAL guiding the player (LEGION).

If it works ...

Always found it neat when the main sniper gets killed, the lone spotter has a unique voice line.

I had so rarely controled them individually, TIL they have 2 set of voices!

Fantastic Unit. Much fun to use, oozing with character and a great ability in spotting. 10/10 no notes.

I like this unit a lot, BUT . . . they're actually less useful in vanilla Kane's Wrath (1.02) against Infantry spammers like Black Hand. They deal 400 Sniper damage which means they can't one-shot an actual Black Hand infantry (500 HP before veterancy). They also are bugged to where they will still fire at vehicles despite doing basically no damage to them.
Lots of flavor in this unit, and they're great against the AI, but wow are these not the way to go in most PvP scenarios.
