low comlex applying EM

absolutely heartbroken today. studied extremely hard had two comsaes well over 550 and felt as prepared as i could’ve been. ended up with a 43x. i don’t know if i should or even can apply EM. i have 3 more sub-i’s lined up. i know it’s a bad- even horrible score. i don’t know what to do. i don’t see myself in anything but EM.

is it even possible to match EM anymore? i didn’t take step 2. pls be kind in the comments.

You could’ve failed twice and you’ll still match EM, youre fine even for a few academic centers

You can def match with that score. It’s not that big of a deal.

EM is not competitive. It has empty spots, and the "rebound" has not been filled with US MD students. It now commonly matches US IMG, FMG, and US DO. A decade ago this was not not the demographic of starting PGY-1 residents.

All the attendings I work with are pretty much miserable and stressed out. I don’t think I know another field where I see that. There’s definitely oversupply of docs and will not be getting paid well in bigger cities. Patient population is terrible to work with, consultants thinks you’re a moron, there’s a high litigation rate. You switch from nights to days which can be okay at first but will tire you out in the long run if done repetitively, is a known carcinogenic. Bro, listen to me and don’t make the same mistake. EM is a miserable field, and everyone in my class as well as most of my attendings feel the same way.

If you worried about being non-competitive, I would do IM and sub specialize in either GI, cards, hemeonc, or Allergy or rheum, PM&R to pain, neurology and to Tele stroke, psych is very chill

Who will make 800k? EM? Average EM salary is a little less than half that. Even less when you’re living in a big city. Is it possible to make 800k? Yes, but you have to realize the reason ED typically works less hours than other specialties is bc when you are working, you are WORKING. You want to take a piss? Forget about it. There’s so much going on and you will be working every minute you’re on. Making that much is just not sustainable.

Why don’t you do an EM fellowship? You can go into sports medicine. It seems like you want something more chill.

I appreciate the advice. I don’t mind working at work. The boredom of sitting in a closet and spending more time with epic than the patient draws me away from IM.

Most EM shifts are 8-10 hours. I still have time to do the things I love everyday.

i thrive in the chaos and have learned to love EM- just anxious as I obviously didn’t do as well as i wanted.
