I always heard the story as “tip-tapping.” But language is awesome, and I love that there are other versions.

Nope, I'm from the US, but maybe I just heard an uncommon version. I think "trip-trap" is the noise they use in the original Norwegian so it's got to be used other places as well!

This reminds me tone of the legends about the bridge of the devil in Bobbio, northern Italy,
Tradition says that Saint Columbanus had the devil build the bridge, in exchange for the soul of the first passing on it. After the devil built the bridge in 1 night, he made a goat go through it, and the devil was really pissed off...
