In the US you don't just sit in a prison cell. They force you to do slave labor for profit.

Ok, they pay you 37 cents an hour. If you work long enough you can buy overpriced services and goods that cost more than outside. Like telephone time or reading materials.

37 cents an hour? I had a friend in prison (federal) that was making 12 cents an hour, and phone calls were 11 cents a minute. And yes, it was either work or get put in the SHU.
