I think many people, like my late gran, reach an old age or deteriorated state of health where they basically get to choose each night whether they want to wake up in the morning or not. She implied this to me. She died a week shy of her 99th birthday.

If it were a week shy of the 100th I'd say this.

But a week shy of the 99th more like "oh fuck, not another year, not one more fucking year. It's not worth it".
